To think this isn’t right?

Just saw a video of a man telling off his wife for being ‘disrespectful’ for not finishing food his Korean grandmother cooked them infront of the GM and his parents and even made comments about the fact she had only eaten the centre meat part of the chicken wings and ‘left most the meat’. The comments on the video were all saying how disrespectful it is to Korean culture.

But AIBU to think that their culture shouldn’t trump the wife’s? Aside from the telling off his wife in front of his family, wouldn’t British people find it disrespectful to point out to your guests how they haven’t eaten everything on their plate? Also, luckily most of us aren’t born in countries where basically sucking every piece of meat off the bone is done out of necessity due to poverty.

I once had a Vietnamese boyfriend who’s family would make the same chicken wing comments at me so maybe it’s a sore point But surely the culture of one group does not trump the other? I’m shocked that the comments on that were ‘you have to understand it’s disrespectful In Korean culture’ but why can’t they understand that it’s not her culture and respect that?

Where are you seeing these videos? If it's Tiktok or Insta or YouTube it'll be faked for the clicks.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/12/2023 20:13

Depends where they are.

If they were in Korea then do as the Koreans do.

RandomButtons · 25/12/2023 20:18

The worst person in that scenario is the one videoing it and uploading it to SM. It’s most likely fake for clicks.

It will be fake.

However, if someone has cooked for you, especially in their home, then it’s good manners to respect their culture. Nothing about one culture ‘trumping’ another. Purely about being polite to your host.

South Korea isn’t a poor country. It’s very affluent and has the 12th biggest economy in the world.

Regardless of if the video was fake or not, it happens. As I have experienced the exact scenario myself.

The video wasn’t in Korea. Nor was I in Vietnam when I experienced the exact same thing with exP’s Vietnamese family. Why should it matter?
respect goes both ways regardless of where you are surely? We don’t demand that every person who moves to this country drops all of their culture when they touch British soil.

Is it just women that should be respectful and eat up, or would a man get the same pressure?

I have no interest in anyone telling me what to eat or do, and am a fussy eater, so nothing would pressure me in to eating anything.

Beezknees · 25/12/2023 20:54

Probably fake. Personally I don't eat meat off the bone, it gives me the ick. I wouldn't do it just because it was part of someone's culture. But I'd probably let them know in advance that I don't eat wings.

Like I said it’s not about the video it’s the situation. As I’ve experienced it so it’s not a made up thing.

You can also like chicken wings without consuming everything on the bone

South Korea isn’t a poor country. It’s very affluent and has the 12th biggest economy in the world.

Korea also includes North Korea though where people are generally very poor, bordering on starvation in many cases and at risk of being sent to a forced labour camp because of something their sibling did. I can see why a North Korean might not be impressed by someone wasting food. It's a fucking shithole there, in the prison camps people literally eat rats and cockroaches just to survive. Then get to watch some being executed with an artillery gun. Horrible place.
