Working Xmas Day

Princesspollyyy · 25/12/2023 19:48

A family member has just messaged me saying people without small children should offer to work every Christmas Day so the ones with little children can enjoy the day.

My children are teenagers. I worked today, but I will be off next Xmas day as I worked this year. So her opinion is I should offer to work.

I disagree, why should I? Can I not enjoy the day too? I would like to enjoy going out for Xmas dinner with my teens and go to the pub with them.

Surely if you choose to work somewhere that's open on Christmas Day, you have to accept that sometimes it will be your turn to work, and you can't expect others to cover you just because you've got small kids?

Absolutely, I work term time because I know I would struggle to get the time off I wanted if I didn't!

I'm with you.

Christmas is for everyone, not just those with small children.

This again? 🙄

Obviously people who don't have small kids get to have Christmas off sometimes. Why do you give a shit what "a family member" thinks?

I know they do. That's not what I asked.

I was just after opinions on what was said to me. Nice to know others think the same as me.

I used to get this too from certain people when I worked in healthcare and I am with you, Christmas is for everyone who celebrates it in whatever form they do. If someone doesn't want to work Christmas for whatever reason then they need to look for an appropriate role.

Send a text saying you'll mull it over.
1 minute later send another text saying you've thought about volunteering to work next year but have decided against it.

I have a 5 year old. I had Xmas off this year, but next year I might not be so lucky. It upsets me deeply, but I wouldn’t be entitled about it. We all chose to do the job, which requires 24hr cover.

Why do people care do much about what other people think??

Show your family member threads from MN today - dozens of exhausted women crying their eyes out because they failed to make the day “special for the little one” despite being off work. On balance, I say I enjoyed my childless Christmas much more.
