To wash the cars?

OneMoreTime23 · 25/12/2023 10:27

DH has Covid so our xmas meal is postponed to January.

DD and DDog have opened their presents. (DH And I don’t do presents.). We picked up a brand new car on 1st Dec.

First time since finishing work on Friday that it hasn’t been throwing it down with rain. I want to go out and wash the cars. DH says it’s ridiculous.

I don’t see the point in sitting around all day. :-/

AIBU?

Are you doing it with a bucket and cloths? -if so, crack on.
Jet washer -absolutely not. No one wants to listen to that Christmas Day.

OneMoreTime23 · 25/12/2023 10:30

Buckets, cloths and lambswool mitts. Akin to a baby’s first bath!

Do whatever you want!

My, semi-adult, kids are with their dad.
We had a Christmas eve meal with my parents last night and are having a Boxing day meal with my parents, kids & a GF tomorrow.
Today we have no plans - and I'm considering gardening when I get up as it's dry and not too windy.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/12/2023 10:31

Sorry your DH has covid - that is rubbish at Christmas.

That said, I wouldn't wash the car on Christmas day!

How old is dd? Obviously depends on her age but if she is young, play with the toys with her. If not, what about some board games/a walk together with the dog/a Christmas film/read a good book and just chill? Have something nice to eat, just the 3 of you.

I definitely wouldn't call it wasting the day if you do any or all of the above.

  1. She’s disappeared back into her room and won’t emerge for hours.

We did all of that yesterday.

YABU. Washing cars is pointless make-work for people with too much time and not enough imagination to fill it with more interesting activities.

Like ironing.

These are fast cars. Faster when they are clean.

(agree re the ironing)

If washing the car is what you want to do, then wash the car! More productive than sitting inside feeling a bit sorry for yourself. Also will help work off the Christmas food 😊

OneMoreTime23 · 25/12/2023 10:36

It’s been years since I’ve had a day to spend cleaning them myself.

Xmas food is mostly in the freezer waiting for January.

Calm down Waynetta. Noone is asking you to wash yours or iron your clothes.

I’ve spent many happy Christmas mornings pruning the climbing roses if the weather allowed.

You crack on!

‘ A servant with this clause
Makes drudgery divine:
Who sweeps a room as for Thy laws,
Makes that and th' action fine. ‘

I am planning to wash my car today. It needs a proper clean and I have plenty of time to finally get in and scrub it inside out. Also, since most of our neighbours are gone, I can park it close enough to the house to not run up and down the street with a bucket and a hoover. I am taking this opportunity regardless of what others may think.

12345onceIcaughta · 25/12/2023 11:10

If you will enjoy it and want to do it, then of course you should.
I always do one load of washing on Christmas Day, much to some mumsnetters horror.
It’s not hard and I am happy doing it.

ManateeFair · 25/12/2023 11:11

I’d think of something nice to do with DD rather than washing the car. Just because you aren’t having Christmas dinner that doesn’t mean the whole day has to be called off. But of course it’s totally up to you and whatever works for you.

She’s had a ton of art stuff and is happily in her bubble drawing just now. (She’s ND so will do this for hours.)

She usually emerges when she wants some human interaction.

In your position, I would definitely be washing my car. We don’t have a driveway and so I have to park on the road. It can often get busy because it is a bit of a rat run but on Christmas Day the traffic is much quieter and with less passing traffic I would consider it a safer thing to do on that day.

Sunshineandrainbow · 25/12/2023 11:58

Talking of car cleaning.

Can anyone recommend a handheld vaccum for doing the car, I hate lugging upright hoover out so sometimes just use a dustpan and rubber brush.

How can you snow foam without a jet wash? 🤣

Mairzydotes · 25/12/2023 12:13

Crack on with washing your car

This time of year you have to make the most of the weather conditions being right .

OneMoreTime23 · 25/12/2023 12:28

It’s not that dirty and has a ceramic coating so the muck should lift off easily.

Need to get out there, it will be going dark soon!

(Sitting on the sofa in my dressing gown with a blanket - haven't done any gardening as despite being dry when I got up to sort the dogs at 7am, it was riding when I got up properly at 10.30am).

Ragwort · 25/12/2023 12:34

puncheur I did do some ironing one Christmas Day ... I'd been to church, had a walk, prepped the meal ... why not do a bit of ironing?

I'm sitting Mumsnetting now ... hardly a good use of time Grin.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 25/12/2023 12:37

It’s just a day like any other. Wash the cars!

I’ve just bleached some grouting, and hand sanded some filled in plaster (both neighbours not at home for the week) and plan to clean the catio roof by hand once I’ve had a brew. Dh has gone to collect the post.
