Pissed off - I am ill on Christmas day, again

FlemCandango · 25/12/2023 08:23

It has happened so often that it is a joke or a cliché.

I am in bed coughing my guts up, feeling like crap. I have postponed Xmas dinner to tomorrow to give me a chance to recover. Over the years I have had mastitis, then various chest infections on or around Christmas.

This year I was fighting the idea "it's just a cold" but I started this hacking painful cough yesterday and I couldn't do anything remotely active without an accompanying coughing fit. No one wants that person to prepare their Christmas dinner. No one else has the level of cooking skills to do it without me involved. The in laws have been put off for the day, dh slept on the sofa bless him.

I am hacked off and my throat hurts and I want to be hungry (currently no appetite) and I really enjoy my roast (veggie style). Ugh, I hope everyone else is feeling fighting fit this morning. Merry ruddy Christmas

On the plus side the kids (3 aged 15 to 19) have been lovely. Braving the shops, making dinner, making the gingerbread house tidying up. They are super stars. Dh also very supportive. But I am tired of this.

I was whisked off to hospital after having a medical episode (Addisons crisis, fatal without immediate emergency treatment) following a chest infection 2 days ago. I’m home with antibiotics and lots of steroids and trying to reassure the kids (11 and 20) both of whom saw me collapse and their Dad had to give me an emergency steroid injection whilst we waited for the ambulance for 40 mins. Absolutely terrifying. So now I’m trying to make Christmas a bit more memorable for the right reasons whilst trying to recover 😞

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/12/2023 10:29

I'm sick almost every year. This year is no exception. 3rd day into antibiotics for the most awful coughing based lurgy and leg elevated due to a fractured ankle. Ho ho ho

Hugs and solidarity to those in the same shitty boat

Chelsss1993 · 25/12/2023 11:27

I’ve had a stomach bug since Friday. Awful diarrhoea, feeling nauseous, aching body. My little girl is 18months old, wanted Christmas to be so magical for her but feel Iv ruined it for her as we’ve had to cancel all of our festive plans. Had to write down instructions for my OH so he can cook the roast and get timings right. Feeling so sorry for myself :(

SENDhelp2023 · 25/12/2023 11:31

Had covid last week and an chronically ill, feeling awful.

MaryActsLikeSheDontCare · 25/12/2023 11:33

Why don’t you plan something extra special for New Year’s Eve or day?

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

JadeSeahorse · 25/12/2023 11:37

I’ve got this cold/flu virus with the sore throat and hacking cough that is doing the rounds.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for anyone who has just started with it but mine began on 08 December. Still feel like I’m swallowing broken glass and coughing continuously. No appetite either! I feel so weak too!

When the hell will it end? 🙄

Nudgethatjudge · 25/12/2023 11:44

I've been fighting a lurgy off for 2 weeks.
Today it's got me. I feel Im going to puke, dodgy bum. Snot filled.
And it's started off my panic attacks
DP is tackling lunch but the smell is not helping me.

DaveWatts · 25/12/2023 11:58

I'm ill too - thought I was just tired after midnight mass & early toddler wake-up but now I have headache, nausea, aching bones and generally feeling too shit to do anything except lie on the sofa. DH is the main chef anyway so no problem there except I can't imagine wanting to eat anything 😥

Snooki · 25/12/2023 12:03

I’m sick too with my 4th UTI in 12 months. The antibiotics are making me feel tired and nauseous and I’ve lost my appetite but it feels like the actual infection isn’t as bad. Luckily DH and DC can fend for themselves so I can rest.

I hope you all recover quickly and are able to enjoy some of the festivities. 💐

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 25/12/2023 12:13

Had a Hacking cough for the past few days which means I haven't gotten a decent night sleep either. Christmas Dinner postponed (dh cooks this but I've been living off tomato soup so he wants to wait till i can enjoy it) my DM is taking DS to hers later so he can enjoy Christmas lunch there.

In the plus DS lives his presents

K4tM · 25/12/2023 13:06

Happy Xmas All! Got my annual chest infection (post sarcoidosis). Happy days. We’re having a slow Cmas day - crossiants for brunch, baked Camembert for lunch, roast duck for tea and profiteroles for supper. Teenagers can snack on quality street/cheese and crackers/whatever else they can find in between. It could be worse! All feel better soon my lovelies!

FlemCandango · 25/12/2023 13:08

We have done present opening and I have had some chocolate. Actually been pretty nice and chill with just the kids and DH.

Unfortunately mil has overreacted to infinity to our change of plans and is causing some stress, not sure what I can do about being ill. But her toys have been thrown out of the pram and she is saying that we probably need to stop doing Christmas together forever now! Also the perennial I don't like her rant and some emotional blackmail nonsense. Well I don't like her behaviour right now, but I genuinely wanted the usual family Christmas so it is all a bit unnecessary. One reason I don't have a close relationship with mil is the element of drama which I just don't engage with, I let DH have that all to himself. We were offering DH to bring the kids over to them for a bit today, then do the meal together tomorrow. So trying to make sure they still saw the grandchildren.

Will all blow over hopefully but I feel for DH.

Woke up yesterday with a really sore throat- ds 18 had tonsillitis last week….. My breakfast consisted of codeine and water.

Turkeys cooked, but I’m putting off starting dinner as I can’t face it yet. Both dc at their dads so only me and dp. We’ll get it done by tea time hopefully lol

Gingerwarthog · 25/12/2023 14:52

@FlemCandango
I feel you!
Tried to stagger on as normal before my Mum exploded and sent me to bed. She is making Christmas dinner with DH for family and guests while I'm coughing and occasionally staggering to the loo.
Can't taste coffee or Prosecco or Christmas cake. Angry

Gingerwarthog · 25/12/2023 14:53

Very very grateful to Mum I should add - but feel guilty.

Hopebrown · 25/12/2023 17:25

My DS 10 has been poorly since last night. Slept from dinner time today till 4 then wanted go bed, feel so awful on him. Hes not been ill since summer and sods law he gets poorly on xmas day, he was so excited for it aswell 😔

Musiclover234 · 25/12/2023 09:10

I work in a hospital. Proper flu is doing the rounds atm so it could explain while you feel so bad. Rest. Get well soon

Why not also mention the elephant in the room - COVID! I saw the stats. It’s woeful out there.

Tell the truth!

humblesims · 25/12/2023 17:35

yup i'm in bed too. shingles and some fluey thing. shivers and overheating. runs from the shingles anti virals. DH recovering from fluey thing and DS 1 coming down with it. So weve cancelled christmas for a few days. DS 2 gone to have a dinner at friends. So i'm giving into it and sleeping mad dreams intersperced with endless episodes of gilded age and friends.

Ohchristmastree23 · 25/12/2023 17:38

Sympathies. I was heavily pregnant last Christmas and this year I started with a fever on Christmas eve and dosed up on paracetamol all Christmas day to get through it.

canta · 25/12/2023 17:52

Last year I had a bad ear infection and spent the day in a hazy tired bubble, this year me and my daughter have the hacking cough flu like thing going around so family visitors cancelled. Luckily OH is the chef of the family so we had a nice lunch (nothing removes my appetite lol).

nancy75 · 25/12/2023 23:25

My boss came in on Monday with a cold - usually when one of us is ill we work from home (not usually a problem & only 2 of us in the office) because he’s a selfish git he wouldn’t work from home & wouldn’t let me either.
By Wednesday I had a stinking cold & by Friday DH had it as well - both of us have felt rough for days & only managed to get through today with the help of a lot of lemsip 😡

doyouwanticewiththat · 25/12/2023 23:51

Me too, chesty coldly thing, as has DD , managed to have DF over for rubbish dinner, he wore a mask all day , happy Christmas Xmas Confused

HolidaysandHightimes · 25/12/2023 23:55

Floralsofa · 25/12/2023 08:25

DH had similar, was better for two days and then as of 5am this morning has norovirus. You have my sympathies, it's rubbish.

Thats covid/flu. The two things are related and aren't separate.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/12/2023 02:07

Also ill on Christmas day. Caught it of my autistic teen, who's less resilient because they are ill. At least we did Christmas on Christmas eve with relatives.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 26/12/2023 05:35

I live in the southern hemisphere, and having put up with years of hearing others say "oh, I can't imagine having Christmas in summer" (in a sneery tone) I now point out that very few people here are sick at this time of year!!!

Sorry you are feeling so bad OP - and others - and hope you are soon better and able to enjoy belated festivities.
