Do you care if your child says loo, toilet, bathroom or bog?

And importantly why?
I ask because I do not understand why anyone cares about things like this and want to understand peoples thoughts around this.

Interesting that you think not middle class = rough.

Pozz · 25/12/2023 07:33

Ladies powder room anyone?

Ok we use loo, or toilet to be fair. Although I do like bathroom but it's American so doesn't sound quite right here.

Big is school teen talk.

Georgie743 · 25/12/2023 07:35

Are there really people who wouldn't care whatsoever if your child asked to go to the bog / shitter at school?!

DappledThings · 25/12/2023 07:35

I hate bathroom when they mean toilet. It's so American and twee to pretend you're not going to the toilet. Not as bad as restroom.

Already this morning various children in this house have said candy, A to Zee and bathroom and been corrected.

Solymoly · 25/12/2023 07:35

If I was in a shop, restaurant or a work situation I would ask where the toilet is, not lav, loo, shitter or bog though

merrymelodies · 25/12/2023 07:45

I loathe the word "toilet" - it makes me cringe.

TheCatfordCat · 25/12/2023 07:54

I grew up calling it a toilet or loo. My DD17 says toilet. I sometimes also say Pot which is a leftover from DDs potty training days. But it really doesn't matter.

MintJulia · 25/12/2023 07:55

We don't use 'bog' Just not in our vocabularly.

I'm a marketing manager and wordsmith. I like language, it earns me a living, and I don't see a reason to make conversation unnecessarily ugly.

But I don't control ds' vocabulary either, with the exception of a couple of truly nasty swear words. Just lead by example.

AlwaysGinPlease · 25/12/2023 08:17

Bog/shitter - in my whole life (50 plus years) I have never known anyone use either of these words other than on TV. They're both equally vile.

I say loo. Both my DC say toilet as that’s what they call it at school. I tried to get them to say loo but they don’t like it as none of their friends say it and it’s not something I’m prepared to get too upset about.

This is the same for me. My children said loo until they went to school and now it is toilet. I still don't like it personally and always use loo, but I'm not going to start correcting them now they are adults!

diefledermaus · 25/12/2023 08:55

"Loo" is the room, toilet is the object. I'd always ask for the loo.

1stWorldProblems · 25/12/2023 08:56

Can't bear bathroom or washroom when it's just a loo / toilet (such as at school - it's confusing, factually inaccurate & prob anti-American snobbery on my part).

I dislike people saying 'pardon' when they mean 'what'. Similar U/non U hang up

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/12/2023 09:01

hattie43 · 25/12/2023 07:14

Why do you care .

It's obvious . Middle class people will use bathroom / toilet or loo at a push .
Rough people use bog / shitter

End of .

That's wrong.

Loo is middle class, toilet working class. Look it up. Bit like napkin v serviette.

It was always loo for us OP. Bog is awful.

irisgg7 · 25/12/2023 09:05

Loo. Sometimes Americans call it the powder room, that tickles me, or a half bath.

Tigertailss · 25/12/2023 09:06

I don't want to hear any descriptor of what happens, I don't need a visual. Loo, toilet or bathroom is fine.

CurlewKate · 25/12/2023 09:06

Loo in the house. Don't care what they say when I'm not around. I know I am irrational. They humour me.

CurlewKate · 25/12/2023 09:10

Happy with bog. I am old and posh enough to prefer vulgarity to refinement!

kitsuneghost · 25/12/2023 09:10

I would correct them if they said loo and disown them if they said bog. couldn't imagine ANY of my friends or family saying bog anyway.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/12/2023 09:17

Georgie743 · 25/12/2023 07:35

I wouldn’t be thrilled if my daughter called it a shitter or bog to a teacher. I wouldn’t really care what she said around her friends.

But quite a lot of the pearl clutching about these phrases is snobbery dressed up as politeness. My only real stipulation for my child would be not to gratuitously offend anyone. Personally I find toilet more grating than bog: it’s tweeness and aspirational clenchedness annoys me, but I am big and ugly enough to recognise that that’s my problem and no one else’s.

I’m not going to micromanage her language (or anyone else’s) on the basis of trying to make her look refined or middle class.

VisitationRights · 25/12/2023 09:26

I grew up in North American in the late 70s/early 80s and we were not allowed to use toilet as it sounded too crass, like using bog over in the U.K. now, I guess.

After living here for many years now I can just about accept my children using toilet without cringing but I generally use loo or, at home, bathroom.

RaininSummer · 25/12/2023 09:31

I would care a lot about this as a child announcing it needs 'the shitter' is just horrible. 'bog' just sounds very common. Poor, toilet, bathroom etc all fine. Not so bad once older so long as they are capable of adjusting their language to suit the company they are in.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/12/2023 09:39

No.

Wasn't the other thread about this the other day boring enough?

theduchessofspork · 25/12/2023 09:41

mantyzer · 25/12/2023 02:32

Did we? Sorry I do not spend my life on MN so did not know.

Well you do know because it was exactly this thread. So why start another.

quisensoucie · 25/12/2023 09:41

Lavatory is the only acceptable term!

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/12/2023 09:48

Well you do know because it was exactly this thread. So why start another.

The vast majority of Mumsnet threads are perennial themes which have been picked over hundreds of times.

Theres no stipulation that everything has to be original material. It’s not a stand up comedy competition.

Let people talk about what they want to talk about. If it offends you don’t post but you can’t control other people’s discourse.
