Please help- first signs of UTI

It's been a mad day and I didn't use the loo for a good 7 hours despite needing to.

I now have that uncomfortable feeling and am worried I'm developing a UTI.

I'm not very prone to them, only had one once but it was so awful I'm hoping I can nip this one in the bud.

I downed a pint of water already and had a good flush out, and I've just had another pint and a half.

Any other tips?

Oh and merry Christmas!

Sorry to hear it OP! Water water water — more than you could think reasonable! Best chance to flush it out. Also — as it’s Christmas — do you have any cranberry juice?

christmaspawpaws · 25/12/2023 01:21

Barley water if you have any
Paracetamol sometimes helps me with the niggling feeling
Otherwise you might need antibiotics if it progresses

meganorks · 25/12/2023 01:21

Put bicarbonate of soda in the water. It's supposed to balance your pH levels. I think that's what's in the little sachets you can buy

PleaseNoUti · 25/12/2023 01:23

Argh no cranberry juice and no bicarbonate either I'm so unprepared! I'll just have to stick with water, imight just keep drinking endlessly even if it means I don't get any sleep as I'll need to pee constantly. Better than faffing around trying to get treatment tomorrow or the day after. Oh did I mention we are abroad too? If only I'd just gone for a wee... idiot!

I’ve had several UTIs over the years and the other thing that helps whilst waiting for antibiotics is painkillers. I’ve also phoned the out of hours doctors via 111 and the doctor asked about my symptoms then sent a prescription to a local chemist without ever needing to see me/do a urine test (there will be one on rota even over Christmas).

Good luck, hope you can catch it in time! They can be so miserable. Non MN-Hug and merry Christmas to you!

ChocAuVin · 25/12/2023 01:25

Sorry just seen you’re abroad Xmas Sad

I've felt like this when I've not drunk enough/held my wee in for too long and it's cleared with lots of water. I'm very prone to utis and I think the concentrated urine irritates my bladder to give the same feeling as a UTI but it's easily flushed out.

Fingers crossed for you! If it is a UTI, Ibuprofen helps me more than paracetamol and just keep drinking.

PleaseNoUti · 25/12/2023 01:27

@ChocAuVin you actually reminded me I have an app through work which may work abroad. They can similarly prescribe and you can pick up at a pharmacy near you so that could be a good back up plan of it gets worse.

It's not painful yet, more just of a slightly irritated urethra feeling which makes me second guess if I need a pee or not if you see what I mean? Let's have another pint!

Fingers (and thighs) crossed OP!

SOxon · 25/12/2023 01:46

OP do you have any whisky in the house? a good slug sorts me out when I feel the tell tale tingle, a tip from a nurse ha ha

GrumpyOldCrone · 25/12/2023 01:49

Unless you have a reason to be at additional risk of UTIs (eg diabetes), you’ll probably be fine with plenty of water. Make sure you pee as often as you can.

PleaseNoUti · 25/12/2023 02:02

I wasn't sure if it was best to pee frequently even if just a little, or wait a bit and have a really full, powerful wee. It gives me more of a 'flushing out' feeling then!

But anyway I've been 4 times since posting so I'm now going to sleep and hope it's not worse in morning

Hi OP. Did you manage to kick it? 🙏

Merry Christmas!

PleaseNoUti · 26/12/2023 08:44

Hi @ChocAuVin I did! I was up all night as I had drunk so much water but my toddler kept waking anyway, and it definitely did the trick. So relieved!
