To report cannabis driver to police?

I walk the dog regularly past a small car park and on two occasions there’s a been a car parked up with young men in it.
They spot me and drive out of the car park which I immediately thought was a bit odd. Yesterday, as they drove past quite closely one of the windows of the car was open a crack and there was a horrendously strong smell of weed. They always speed off through the lanes.
I have their car reg number and was going to report this to the police. DD 20 says is no big deal so dont bother in case it comes back to bite me on the bum as it were.
WWYD? Report or turn a blind eye? I’d hate for there to be an accident from drug driving but I also don’t know much about drug taking - would weed affect driving anyway?

I’d report it on the Crimestoppers website.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/12/2023 07:44

Yes, it will affect the persons ability to drive, it is illegal and the driver would be done for it. More people are done for drug driving now, than drink driving, going by what the Police have said down here.

It also stays in the system a lot longer than alcohol too.

If it's not the driver doing it, they won't be done, his mates will.

RandomMess · 24/12/2023 07:45

Yes report it it's as bad a drink driving.

Deathbyathousandcats · 24/12/2023 07:46

I would.

wildeflowers · 24/12/2023 07:52

I don't condone this at all, but typically stoned drivers actually drive much more carefully. It's a lot safer than alcohol. I'm in the US where weed is legal but driving while high is not. I use it medicinally but absolutely never when I need to drive within the next few hours. (I did and so did everyone I know when I was younger but would never now that I'm a parent) So I'm not saying its okay, it's just not as dangerous as you might think. While trying to evade detection they usually drive a little under the speed limit and take their turns and such a little too cautiously. Cops look out for that the way they look out for a drunk driver being erratic and uncareful. I see drivers all the time smoking in their car and it never occured to me to report them. I would if I saw an actual reason to but I never have. I have however reported drunk drivers many times.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 24/12/2023 07:53

I wouldn’t as surely they’ll know it was you?
Also the driver might not of been smoking.
To the police, that’s like getting a report saying I saw someone drinking a bottle of beer in the back of a car, so reporting it days later - I’m honestly not sure they’d be interested?

Melodysmum12 · 24/12/2023 08:07

No I wouldn’t. They might know it was you and it could have repercussions for you or your son. You can’t prove it and the police probably won’t do much. It’s a common occurrence in our road where I often seen drug deals and I live in a nice area!

AllEars112232 · 24/12/2023 08:27

I’ve reported this type of things to the police and I’d encourage you to do the same.
They wont just go round to the registered car own (who might not have even been in the car) and say they’ve been reported for using drugs. The people in the car WONT know that you’ve reported something.
What they will do is put the details in their intelligence system, and if the car is seen acting strangely anywhere else, this might be the thing that alerts the police and results in an arrest (possibly unconnected to smoking weed- who knows?).
Members of the public should always report anything suspicious to the non emergency line, it helps the police so much and they really appreciate these types of reports.

(I have a family member in law enforcement intelligence department)

Not buying that at all, they are impaired. Completely unsafe.

randomchap · 24/12/2023 08:58

Report it, the police take it seriously, I've reported it in the past.

Oh I 100% believe it however if my dabble in weed in my teens is anything to go by, 'driving much more carefully' would probably actually be much more dangerous, for example, tootling down a motorway at 20 mph and over exaggerating every turn.

That's bullshit, drug driving is illegal for a reason. https://academic.oup.com/clinchem/article/59/3/478/5621997

Ah, better get done weed then, so I can drive more carefully

Even if the driver isn’t smoking but sitting in the car whilst the passenger does they will still be stoned. My ex bf when I was a teen used to smoke and as an adult now I think back to how I really shouldn’t have drove home after because I was definitely impaired from just sitting in the same room. It’s not comparable to a passenger drinking a bottle of beer as the driver can’t get pissed off the smell of beer.

porridgeisbae · 24/12/2023 09:17

The police are hopeless but yes, report it on principle.

but typically stoned drivers actually drive much more carefully

What a ridiculous, insensitive and dangerous thing to say.

I was recently in a car accident caused by someone high on cannabis. I am injured, off work due to that injury, have a written off car and am now suffering from anxiety.
