Why is Tesco letting a cult fundraise in its shops

obviously NC for this

went to the big Tesco in Beckton, east London, earlier today. 2 young men were enthusiastically dancing and singing whilst holding those fundraising buckets. They were collecting donations for the UKCG ‘helpline’.

UKCG is a Christian cult, started in Brazil, but now present in a number of countries. Their leader/founder has spent a significant amount of time in jail. They are a dangerous organisation.

why is Tesco allowing a cult to fundraise in its shops??

You'd think supermarkets would do a brief bit of homework before letting charlatans like these use their premises to scam money from the unsuspecting. They were the subject of a Panorama doc only a few weeks ago!

Hopefully a sign their ££ is running out?

No they've been doing this in various supermarkets at Christmas time for years and years. Local Iceland used to let them pack customers' bags in return for donations.

A Very British Cult on BBC Sounds is worth a listen.

Thanks all for your replies- I haven’t had a chance over Christmas to contact Tesco but have decided to contact all the retailers mentioned here as having allowed UCKG fundraisers/etc on their site, with the links you shared plus anything I can find, to raise this with them.

this thread has shown to me that UCKG are actually worse than I thought.

will update when/if I hear back from them

I don’t think there is a legal definition of cult - UCKG definitely fits the academic definition though

@Spidey66 they indeed are all over Haringey. They also have a small church by the Stamford Hill roundabout, if you keep going towards Seven Sisters - it’s right in front of where a road finishes, forgot the name, it’s where the 67 turns right out off to go to Dalston. They also go door knocking around Haringey - I had the displeasure a number of times when I lived in Haringey

Obviously, the point went over your head. Number one, there is a BIG difference between a religion and a cult, whether you wish to believe it or not. The Catholic Church has never gone after members with threats if they drop out of church. Number two, the Catholic Church is not out on the streets trying to get you to give them money, harassing you and trying to recruit you.
I am not Catholic nor have I ever been, BUT, I have gone to mass there and guess what? NO ONE tried to keep me, brainwash me, deprive me of food and water until I submitted or threatened me when I left after the service.

This constant bashing of organized religion is so lame and really stupid. If you don't like it, don't belong. Go join a cult and then try and leave. Good luck.

I mean, there WAS that whole thing about priests abusing thousands of kids and the church not only hushing it up but routinely moving paedo priests on to new areas, rather than stopping them being around kids, so they just abused new ones instead.

Pretty sickening.

It's not surprising that lots of people have a terrible view of Catholicism,
