“I ordered my online shopping way back in October…”

Seeing this on a lot of threads right now - “I was the first person to book my online shop back in October, so how dare they not show up today with my wine / stuffing / potatoes / etc”.

AIBU to think people don’t understand how online food shopping works?!

Yep...just had an email - it's been cancelled. 🙄

Oh no that’s fucking shit! Will you have to go out tomorrow and do a physical shop or are they going to reschedule it to tomorrow?

Dotjones · 23/12/2023 20:17

That's what online shopping is, you're gaining convenience by increasing the risk of something going wrong. You've got out of fighting through the throngs in store, the trade off is that if it goes wrong you're fucked because you're not on the ground to grab something else.

lemmein · 23/12/2023 20:17

I didn't collect it @Prawncow - my dh did, he said they just shrugged and said it wasn't all in stock 😠

My balance was supposed to be £136, instead it was £56! There was a dessert missing, the sausage roll garland thing (that tbf I couldn't remember ordering so wasn't too arsed about that) - and they substituted my bells&whistles turkey for a smaller basic one.

I always order from them at Xmas, this is the first time Ive had an issue. I didn't even know it was possible to have an issue with M&S food shop!!

Morrisons01 · 23/12/2023 20:19

Ive always said it should be the same with the offers etc, you pay x at the time of the order, and it should be order early then your order should be proitiosed otherwise it defeats the ordering system ?

lemmein · 23/12/2023 20:21

In fairness, you can amend and cancel your supermarket shop right till the night before so I can understand them sometimes not having it all in stock - there's got to be leeway both sides.

(But M&S can go and fuck themselves 😤)

Prawncow · 23/12/2023 20:21

That’s mad. They’re usually so organised. Swapping the turkey when you ordered so far in advance is really bad.

JassyRadlett · 23/12/2023 20:21

TBH I think it depends on whether it's shop-based or warehouse-based.

For the warehouse-based online retailers they could have longer cutoff time for Christmas orders to help with stock ordering and control which would make things a lot better. But because it's still 10pm/midnight the night before they don't have the predictability they need to be able to better guarantee what was ordered.

It's par for the course that it doesn't work very well so I always get mine delivered on the 22nd so I've still got time to brave multiple supermarkets because there are always way more substitutes than usual.

It's always an interesting study in what items nobody bloody wants because that's what you get as substitutes. Giant stuffing ball with a bread sauce centre, anyone?

DH is going out! We have no bread and very little milk so need some of those if nothing else. Luckily he'd already picked up most of the Christmas food.

Ah well...

gggonewired · 23/12/2023 20:27

Hmm.
I'm unable to work out whether a 'Christmas slot' = a normal slot, just this week. Or items from an exclusive 'Christmas catalogue'/ 'Food to order'.
If it's the former I'm not surprised the latter I'd be livid.

henrysugar12 · 23/12/2023 20:28

I ordered from Morrisons, it arrived today and I'd forgotten to order bloody potatoes! Bagged a bargain 15p pack from Aldi though. And surprisingly, Aldi was no busier than any other Saturday!

I was missing the following from my Morrisons delivery though...

We’re really sorry but you're missing:

  • 2 x St Omer Shandy Bottles
  • 1 x Morrisons Ready Roll Puff Pastry
  • 1 x Morrisons The Pizza Deal Loaded Potato Skins
  • 1 x Morrisons Party Dip Mix
  • 2 x Morrisons Tempura King Prawns

We’ve had to make some substitutions, sorry about that.

  • 1 x Explore Cotton Candy Seedless Grapes with
- 1 x Morrisons Seedless Grape Selection
  • 2 x Barr Lemonade with
- 2 x Schweppes Lemonade
  • 1 x Morrisons Chocolate Pudding with
- 1 x Cadbury Milk Chocolate Sticky Puddings
jojom10 · 23/12/2023 20:30

I booked my Tesco slot in October. Reserved with a couple of bottles of spirits. Completed my order last night and everything turned up this morning.....

jojom10 · 23/12/2023 20:31

I should say that my delivery comes from a distribution centre. I think it makes a big difference if it comes from a shop.

Tinkerbyebye · 23/12/2023 20:32

If you order earlier then, as I understand it, they use those waiting orders to help judge how much they need to order from suppliers. Hence Ocado, who are very well organised having very few subs or missing items compared to other supermarkets

Hipnotised · 23/12/2023 20:40

@henrysugar12 my cancelled order was Morrisons so at least yours arrived!!

katedan · 23/12/2023 21:01

My Sainsburys delivery arrived today with no substitutes I was happily amazed. Very impressed

Mirabai · 23/12/2023 21:07

I use Waitrose and Ocado at Christmas - no substitutions this year or last.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/12/2023 21:20

I used to get something similar when working in travel, ‘but I booked a year ago, how come we’re delayed’.

Floralnomad · 23/12/2023 21:23

I’m not sure it works that well with Ocado as my sister was missing a fair bit of her M&S party food in her Friday delivery and the substitutions were not things we would eat .

Zanatdy · 23/12/2023 21:31

Only 1 sub for me but I ended up getting most of the dinner stuff from Morrisons a few days ago so I didn’t have to go out tomorrow

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/12/2023 21:35

So many people hold their slot with champagne etc which doesn't help with stock. They change their order 24/48/72 hours before to what they actually want and it throws everything into disarray.

I'd never risk having my Must Haves delivered on the 23rd/24th. That's for the nice to haves.
.
I went to Sainsburys at 6am today. No turkey in sight. The online pickers were working alongside customers. People were pissed off in store so I imagine those that ordered will be even crosser.

Sintel · 23/12/2023 21:49

This is the reason we use Ocado - they rarely sub and certainly have never cancelled.

gotomomo · 23/12/2023 22:01

Even food to order isn't guaranteed - Sainsbury's I'm looking at you! Ordered £300 of party food not Christmas even and less than half was ready to pick up at the designated time, shop manager ended up running around the store trying to find similar items, including lots of vegan and gf

ohsuzannah · 24/12/2023 00:46

There's only dd and I. I ordered a tiny turkey joint in a foil dish 1.2 kg and got a substitution of a 4.5 kg turkey crown. I don't know how the hell we're going to eat it all! ☺️

Georgeandzippyzoo · 24/12/2023 00:51

Nasahoodie · 23/12/2023 19:24

I agree. You're guaranteed the slot not the produce.

But it's still annoying. My food shop turned up on Friday with 6 pints of milk that go off tomorrow and a loaf of bread that goes out of date on Christmas day. 🙄

I don't do online shopping. I was at sainsburys this morning and I bumped into a friend who does online shopping with Asda. Her shopping arrived late last night with over £90 s worth cancelled so she had to come out today. She def won't be relying on them next year.
