These are such wise words for me, certainly.

Marian Keyes on taking care of yourself at Christmas

For those for whom Christmas is not the most wonderful time of the year, some advice from Marian

Thank you for outlining her main points. People will find this very helpful, if they don't want to watch the video.

I'm glad you liked it and I'm glad I shared it. :-)

It's a great video. She does an equally great one about the bullshit that is New Year's Eve. She says at the start of the Christmas one that if you love Christmas then scroll on by coz it's not for you 😊 I rewatch both every year and find them very comforting, although I find MK quite irritating on the whole

'Isn't she in her 50s? Does giving up alcohol really make that much difference?'

I think she turned 60 this year. She's had loads of stuff done to her face and is very open about it

I can't abide this victim mentality that seems to surround all occasions these days. On mother's day we can't just celebrate, we have to think of every other permutation of mother ("dog moms"), at Christmas it's all about how miserable it can be.

We need to give our collective heads a wobble.

I agree completely.

'I can't abide this victim mentality that seems to surround all occasions these days'

Christmas is a really hard, shitty time for some people, it just is. And feeling like you can't admit to that, that the only acceptable way to be is happy and jolly, just makes you feel even shittier. MK is just creating a bit of space for people who feel similar to her about Christmas and NY. She says in the first few seconds that if you love Christmas, crack on, but avoid the video because it's not for you

pleasejustnawta · 28/12/2023 15:42

@Lottapianos I think the fact she has made a bomb writing chick lit is probably a big part of why she looks so fab. She eat very well with the best food ,get the best health care going and beauty products etc Money helps a great deal if you are wise.

Lottapianos · 28/12/2023 15:50

'Money helps a great deal if you are wise'

Oh absolutely. If I had to sum up why she looks so good in one word, I would say 'money'!

Dontcallmescarface · 28/12/2023 16:08

I had to stop watching after 20 seconds....the patronising tone was just too much.

She loves her skincare and tweakments. She's also not super thin which does tend to help with an ageing face.. I agree that she always looks great. Plus, she's very happy with her life and her lovely husband.

Despite not being able to have children. Good on her.

I spent part of my afternoon supporting a young man who hates this time of year because his Father would rape him on the sofa as a 'special Christmas treat' for himself and he would be lying there staring at the Christmas tree lights praying for it to be over.

I'll let him know he should get over his victim mentality because we all need to go back to pretending that everyone has a wonderful life all the time and he's ruining it for you.

Absolutely. And then wrote Angels all about it. My sister had an MC around that time and told MK at signing. She was so nice to her.

That is horrendous 😔

Bloody love her

a1234567 · 29/12/2023 15:19

I think she just has good genes too. Undoubtedly she has made a lot of money being and making a huge success from her books. She can afford nice treatments and products. Why are we so concerned, as women, about what people look like anyway....? My post wasn't about her appearance, but the content of her video.. which I think speaks volumes about how we are in society when it comes to the cultural meme of Christmas. 😀

Here is her advice for New Year as well, if anyone finds this helpful. 😀

You only have to listen to the first 10 seconds in order to hear her say that the funniest thing anyway... (She says that New Year is a bag of shite, and I couldn't agree with her more about this sentiment) apologies for the spoiler! 😀

Marian Keyes talks about New Year

That makes me laugh out loud every time! She's spot on

Desecratedcoconut · 29/12/2023 16:17

Given the increased rates in suicide at Christmas and New Year then I think it's fair to say that both events are a precarious time for lots of people in a bunch of different ways. I can't begrudge her a cutesy tone because for some that might be the exact right hand hold that brings them a bit of peace, friendship and kindness.

I think it is soothing and friendly. I'm not sure why anyone would think this is demeaning of a clever person? 🙄

a1234567 · 29/12/2023 20:36

@Lottapianos: I think so too. I am finding it comforting as I sit here, contemplating my life! :-) Thank you for your comment.
