Best drinks for no hangover?!

Cloud44 · 22/12/2023 20:56

I hardly drink but would like a couple over Christmas when socialising… just if possible I don’t want awful hangovers! I’m a real lightweight so literally thinking one or two drinks…. What’s the chances of avoiding a hangover with a prosecco and lemonade?! Baileys?! I know it’s first world problems but any suggestions much appreciated!

Both prosecco and baileys give bad hangovers IMO. I would go for a clear spirit (vodka, tequila, gin) soda and lime cordial.

sunights · 22/12/2023 21:02

Procescco over baileys.
My head is clearest after a single malt whisky on ice.

Squirrelblanket · 22/12/2023 21:03

I wouldn't worry if you are only having two drinks. But the advice is usually to stick to clear drinks such as gin/vodka. You could have them with a generous amount of mixer, or white wine with ice and soda etc

Edinburghguy · 22/12/2023 21:03

A good champagne.

If you don’t want the expense - a long vodka with soda water and lime.

Avoid darker drinks.

Angrymum22 · 22/12/2023 21:14

Gin or vodka with large amount of mixer. I rarely drink nowadays and particularly avoid any form of wine, but I can easily cope with a couple of G&Ts without any hangover.
My favourite is gin and ginger beer ( fevertree) but not ginger ale. It’s lovely and warm and refreshing. Fevertree also do a damson/sloe flavoured tonic water which is delicious.
Vodka with any fruit juice is usually fine.
White spirits such as gin, vodka and white rum are pretty good for avoiding hangovers, in moderation. Just make sure you add loads of mixer.
Wine based alcohol contains higher levels of congeners that cause hangovers. They are the by product of fermentation. Spirits probably contain much lower levels of congeners since after fermentation they are distilled to concentrate the alcohol and the congeners are lost during the distillation process.

Water.

WorriedMillie · 22/12/2023 21:16

Echo the advice of a watered down white spirit :)

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/12/2023 21:17

Water

Tea

Lemonade

One glass prosecco to five cups/mugs/glasses of non alcoholic drinks.

Tighginn · 22/12/2023 21:17

Just don't bother, you wouldn't actively choose to do anything else that would make you feel like the worst version of yourself.

ithinkicanithinkican · 22/12/2023 22:00

I find I feel much less hungover if I drink organic wine. I didn't believe it til I tried it a few times! I'm not much of a drinker anyway these days, but I hate any sense of feeling crap after drinking, so this has been really helpful as I do enjoy a glass or two with a nice meal out.

Whataretheodds · 22/12/2023 22:02

Prosecco and lemonade?? Terrible - too much sugar.

Better off with Vodka, soda water and fresh lime alternated with a large glass of water, and not starting until you've had a proper meal.

19lottie82 · 22/12/2023 22:07

drink a glass of water between drinks

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 22/12/2023 22:25

Any drinks that do not have gluten in them, cider, gins, clear spirits etc
I rarely drink either but back in the day used to get awful hangovers after my Saturday night out and only years later found out gluten makes me ill hence horrific hangovers and sick and shaky, vomitty for days.
Now if have few at xmas or new year have a few cider or a few gin and am fine, no shakes next day or severe anxiety.

UndertheCedartree · 22/12/2023 22:30

I don't usually drink but I usually have a glass of Bucks fizz on Christmas morning and a bit of Bailey's or Disarrano in a coffee in the afternoon. I don't get a hangover from that.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 22/12/2023 22:33

Vodka, soda water and lime, no hangover and no dehydration!

Needhelpsupport · 22/12/2023 22:34

Have been. dieting so no wine but Bacardi and Diet Coke really is lovely and feel absolutely fine the next day !

mynameiscalypso · 22/12/2023 22:35

Gin is normally fine for me.

mrsfollowill · 22/12/2023 22:39

Clear white spirit- I find gin the best- with loads of ice and tonic. Two of those shouldn't make anyone feel hungover. Avoid brandy, red wine and Jack Daniels.
Never get drunk form Ouzo or Pernod either. From bitter experience 😭

Spacemoon · 22/12/2023 22:40

Surely it depends on the person? Those saying clear alcohol, I see where there coming from but thats not always the case. I personally get the worst hangovers from vodka and gin, whereas with dark rum, port, brandy, red wine etc I'm fine! I think it's more about what you are used to.

I'd say stick to what drink you would usually go for on the odd occasions you do drink. Don't drink something you don't really like or fancy just on the off chance you won't get a hangover. If you're that susceptible to hangovers that just one or 2 drinks would leave you hanging, surely it's not worth it? There are some lovely no alcohol beers, ciders, prosecco and wines about.

theduchessofspork · 22/12/2023 22:40

Clear spirits - gin, vodka

Curiosity101 · 22/12/2023 22:45

I've not seen anyone mention it yet but the main thing is to ensure you know how much you're actually drinking.

Do not free pour!

Remember the guidance is that the average person processes 1 unit of alcohol per hour. So if you drink more than one unit of alcohol per hour you'd get steadily more drunk if that was your tolerance.

My suggestion would be to stick to a maximum of 4 units over a minimum of 3 hours. It really doesn't matter what you drink, only how much you drink (units) and over what length of time.

I'd also agree with PPs - don't forget to hydrate with soft drinks too.

YouAndMeAndThem · 22/12/2023 22:46

Why would you drink prosecco and lemonade?!? 🤢

Avoid wine, avoid mixing, definitely spirits with clear mixer

deadassjackie · 22/12/2023 22:49

Drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink.
(edit: added the word each)

CuntRYMusicStar · 22/12/2023 22:54

Aldi have an organic Prosecco which is good for no hangovers because it doesn't have sulphates.

Don't mix it with lemonade though! Drink the lemonade in between glasses of Prosecco.

MissMistyy · 23/12/2023 01:58

Do people actually get hangovers from two drinks? Although I must admit while I drink very rarely these days I haven't had a hangover in years but as a student I had awful 2/3 day hangovers after a single night out. I've seemingly outgrown hangovers.
