To think that a vacuum accessory broken after two months, is not ‘wear and tear?’

I bought a vacuum cleaner in October. A brand that I thought was reliable and good quality.

The vacuum has an attachment that clips on to it, on which various heads are stored.

A couple of weeks ago, the clip broke. I emailed the manufacturer to request they sent me a new one. They refused, saying it’s ’wear and tear.’

I emailed back to say that my understanding is goods have to last for an appropriate time and you can’t class two months ‘wear and tear.’

They have emailed back to say they won’t budge as after ‘careful review,’ the attachment is subject to wear and tear. Which I’m sure it is, but for it to break in two months surely can’t be indicative of this?

I would get on Twitter.

If it was damaged by ‘wear and tear’ within 2 months of purchase they’re basically admitting that it’s unfit for purpose. The clip shouldn’t be breaking after 8 weeks. That’s ludicrous.

Cormorantstrikesback is right. Twitter is the best option.

YANBU - from next year my New Years Resolution is to keep every single receipt in a box and to take back EVERYTHING thats not up to scratch and demand a refund. Everything include the strawberries I paid £2.50 that went from rock hard to mouldy overnight.

I'm sick of it.

Sick of spending my hard earned cash on fucking crap for other people to profit from.

hedgehoglurker · 22/12/2023 14:06

I've had the same. The clips are usually very flimsy, so whilst they can store the attachments perfectly well, they get snapped off very easily whilst using the vacuum What vacuum and how much was it?

I've only had this with one under £100. More expensive vacuums tend to have more robust, or even simply no storage for attachments.

Never thought to complain though as the attachments still work, just the tiny storage clip has snapped off. (Unless I've misunderstood. )

Edited as paragraphs had been removed, hopefully fixed...

Plastic clips are certainly prone to break- I can often see one on a new purchase, and wonder how long it will last- but in your case it is absurd to say wear and tear- unless a child got at it and broke it, which isn't the case here.
You'll have to take it further: Trading Standards, the seller's Complaint's procedure, letter to the Chief Executive etc.
Good Luck!

@tescocreditcard take a photo of your receipt too, some fade to unreadable surprisingly fast! (Or if touch with hand gel)

monicagellerbing · 22/12/2023 14:40

Was it a shark? Mine did this within weeks too

I do this. I don't have enough money not to sweat the small stuff.

Mudflaps · 22/12/2023 19:49

Wasn't expecting it to be a Meile!! I've one for over 10 years and its going strong but it's the old fashioned type with accessories stored insde it. I'd go on their social media and highlight it and hopefully they'll see sense
