Optional National ID cards - would you get one if they came back?

If this was another alternative to the current system we have and you could choose which organisations you would be okay with sharing your information automatically with (and those you didn’t would ask you for ID in line with the current system), would you get one? I hold a national id card for a developing country and I personally don’t mind them - I find my life would be a lot easier just showing an ID card. Would you prefer this system?

Which other countries have a national ID card that you have to carry around?

All of them! Greece (I have a Greek ID card), France, Italy, all European countries have them! All except Republic of Ireland, where they are optional.

A national ID card should be mandatory for all citizens from the age of 16.

My opinion, as someone who HAD to carry ID from that age, or face arrest if I could not produce. (Armed forces and then working abroad).

I think its the idea of having to produce it if asked that people in the UK don't like.

Imagine how often you'd have to produce it if you were male and non-white, as well!

But having an ID card that you can show to open bank accounts etc without any other faff would be good.
