Love Actually annoyances

Watched it last night for the 26363th time and there are still things that really irritate me.

  1. Emma Watson calling Liam Neeson a sissy when he cries at the loss of his wife.
  1. Juliet kissing her husbands best friend in the middle of the street. And what would have happened if the guy had come to the door in the middle of those boards?
  1. This is the worst, the entire Laura Linney storyline. I get that she's giving up romantic love for the love of her brother but why? Why can't she have both? We're led to believe Carl is a nice guy, why wouldn't he have accepted her situation and supported her? And why does her story finish so abruptly about 45 minutes before everyone else's?

Not to mention all the sexism and misogyny but these things always just stick out to me as being the most ridiculous. Thoughts?

I hate everything about the film because it's pretty much unfunny, uninteresting and smug. Can't bear most of the storylines esp Keira Knightley, Martin Freeman & Laura Linney. The only bit I like it Rowan Atkinson. Comedy gold

As if the Keria Knightley character and her husband could afford that mews house.

I don't think their jobs are ever mentioned. They could be millionaires

NutellaNut · 22/12/2023 08:15

I watched it again the other day (or rather I kept it on in the background while I was doing something else ) to see if I found it as annoying as I did the first time I saw it. Yep, pretty much! I was about to list all the stuff I found cringeworthy and just plain stupid, but realised I’d be here all day. (The touching Alan Rickman/ Emma Thompson storyline was the exception. ) A shame really, as I normally like those Richard Curtis films, but this one is a real turkey.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 22/12/2023 08:15

Colin goes to America. Misogynist objectifying rubbish.

Edinburghguy · 22/12/2023 08:18

I like Bill Nighy but he couldn’t pull off the ageing rock star thing. He looks and sounds like a bank manager.

I also find the writer apologising now about the film’s lack of perceived political correctness annoying. And the nauseating BBC lapping this up especially the bit about the lack of an lbqtxyz storyline.

RainbowRuby · 22/12/2023 08:19

Can we do a similar thread for The Notebook? All i saw was Rachel McAdams throwing a toddler tantrum when she couldn’t control the people around her.

I never get the hype over this movie. I watched - no sorry - endured it once and will never put myself through it again.

I’d never seen it and at the age of 50 decided I wanted a trashy feel good film before bed so watched it. One of the most awful films I’ve ever watched. Some excellent actors but zero depth of story line. Emma Thompson was brilliant as usual but even her acting could drag a decent story line out of that garbage. What was all the hype about? Emperors new clothes? Endurance is the right phrase here! 😂

the80sweregreat · 22/12/2023 08:20

I did love the bromance between Bill and his manager. He gave up a party at Elton's in order to be with him ! I know I probably would have gone to Elton's !

Isometimeswonder · 22/12/2023 08:21

Hate the film. That and Bridget Jones.
Insufferable!

autienotnaughty · 22/12/2023 08:06

@Savedpassword no Hugh grant was her brother Liam Neeson her friend

Ah I knew there was a brother somewhere! Must pay closer attention!

EarringsandLipstick · 22/12/2023 08:01

Oh really @Savedpassword 😀 maybe I was wrong all along!

No you’re right-I’m wrong 😀

Maddy70 · 22/12/2023 08:26

Its really not supposed to be factual its a great film not a documentary

I love the film (actually!) but cringe at the fat comments about Martine. Awful.

it was Emma Thomson who called the grieving husband a cissy. Also awful. (What is their relationship anyway?)

Isnt that the point? Everyone thinks theyre fat but they really arent!

She was his sister

It's fine, obviously, to dislike the film. (I can't stand The Notebook).

But it's a bit silly to over-analyse every element of it - it wouldn't get made today, for valid reasons. There's lots that doesn't make sense. But it's fine to have a movie that appeals on another level (to some) and meets a certain whimsical need, without every element having to make logical, real-life sense.

(I will always love the Hugh Grant dance. Even more so as he does the DVD commentary with Richard Curtis (it's very funny) and says how much he objected to doing it. )

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 22/12/2023 08:28

This is a funny take on all the "romantic" bits of it

SuspiciousSue · 22/12/2023 08:31

I cringe so badly when that 10 year old girl is doing ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ and it seems just a little bit too sexy when she’s pointing out into the crowd. I don’t like it.

amylou8 · 22/12/2023 08:34

Aww I love it. Yes it's 20 years old and wouldn't be made now, but neither would a lot of things. I wish I was as chubby as Martine McCutcheon!

SpringMeadows · 22/12/2023 08:34

I dislike Kate Winslet's character in The Holiday more than most of the above. Goody 2 shoes.

OT2023 · 22/12/2023 08:35

I think it was on here I read that basically each man is in a more powerful position than the female he ends up with. Makes it a bit more depressing.

I don't think their jobs are ever mentioned. They could be millionaires

I always think ‘bank of mum and dad’ when I see movies with young people in homes they couldn’t afford in reality.

ssd · 22/12/2023 08:38

Ive never watched Love Actually.
Even the name annoys me Grin

ALittleTeawithmilk · 22/12/2023 08:39

I think the Hugh Grant dance was the funniest thing in the movie.

Rosiiee · 22/12/2023 08:39

@ALittleTeawithmilk but how old is the movie? Maybe life was more affordable 20 years ago? But yes, neither of them seem to have actual jobs!

peppermintcrisp · 22/12/2023 08:40

Richard Curtis's faughter hates the film so he made The Genie! Another problematic awful film!
