To go through car insurance

Was parked up waiting to pick up DC.

Woman in car speeds past me and knocks my wing mirror right off. Luckily she stopped.

Got her details etc and she said she would rather I get a quote and let her know.

I realised by time I got home that wing mirror cannot be temporarily fixed (tape etc) and its not drivable. Next available appointment at garage was 11th Jan.

So I rang insurance. They sorted me a courtesy car to pick up tomorrow and repair will be done asap but in the meantime, at least I have a car to drive.

AIBU to do this?

Nope. Not unreasonable in the least, unless she wanted to pay for a hire car for you until your mirror was fixed.

Not unreasonable at all. The way cars are built now - electronics, safety features - you often cant tell how extensive the damage is until it’s in the garage and they take it apart. Someone hit my car recently, damage looked minimal but it needed a whole new bonnet and wing. Plus if the car’s on lease and will be going back all work needs to be covered by a reputable garage. If you’ve got a newish car the days when you could knock out a dent or stick a bit of filler over it are over

Not unreasonable at all. Obviously your premiums will increase as a result but hopefully not by too much.

Thanks everyone.

I got the hire car today - its pretty hefty at £83 a day so I doubt she would have given me the money upfront for that and the repair costs straight away and paying that amount so close to Christmas is just not feasible on my side.

Insurance said it'll all be charged to the third party and no negative impact to my NCB.

I feel bad as its so close to Christmas and someone's going to get an insurance claim slapped on them, but I couldn't risk not having my car as I depend on it for ASD son and getting to/from work, not to mention doing lifts on xmas day for family that cannot drive.

Its a newish car, 2019 and the wing mirror has the heating etc in it so it'll not be a cheap one you can just pick up.

Most people IMO would be willing to pay upfront as they think it'll be min costs for a wing mirror. However, mine is going to cost at least £250 just for the part and there was not a chance I could be without a car for that long. I knew that if I messaged her to say I'll need costs for hire car until 12th January plus part cost and service charge that I would.likely be told no.

Very annoying as she is a resident on the street of the school I was parked at so she knows exactly what it is like to drive down them.

Hi Op - sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you likely will see an increase from this - protected NCD doesn’t mean that your premiums won’t go up next year, they’re two separate things.

You will retain your NCD, but premiums ar based on risk, and as someone who has made a claim, even a no fault one, this is taken in to consideration as part of that calculation.

Unfortunately as PPs say, your renewal premium will go up, even though it wasn't your fault.

My DH was driving on a roundabout last year when someone crashed into the back of him.

Ive been getting my new insurance quotes as my policy is running out and when I declare this claim on my policy (DH's a driver on my policy), my renewal quotes go up by £400 on average:(

The reason people agree to this is that irrespective of NCD your premium as well as hers will go up for years to come. There are also excesses which can eat into any benefit.
