To not want to claim on home insurance after burglary.

So we got burgled recently but luckily we didn’t lose much.

We told our home insurance company with the aim of them covering the cost of the stolen goods but more so the damage to some of the double glazing which will need to be replaced and will cost at least 3k.
We are worried now that our premiums will go up and we wanted to re do all the double glazing in the whole house at some point any way.
Does anyone know whether the premiums only go up if we go through with the claim or now that we have informed the insurance company of what happened they will go up anyway so we may as well claim?
It would obviously buy us time as we did not want to replace all the double glazing ideally until next year.

I think the fact that you’ve informed them will have already increased your risk unfortunately.

Alarum · 21/12/2023 17:27

As above - the premium is based on level of risk. Whether you choose to claim or not, being burgled impacts on the level of risk.

You will need to declare the burglary if you make a claim or not, I think.

Maryamlouise · 21/12/2023 17:42

You have to declare claims or incidents that could have led to a claim so the premium will be impacted anyway

I had to claim for a bad leak last year and it was a 5k payout. My premium only went up about 5 quid for the year this year.

We had a no fault claim where a out of control vehicle hit our boundary wall. We've been here 30 years and it's the first time there's been such an incident so it's not a common liability of where our wall is situated.

We didn't pay a penny for the repair and the excess was returned very quickly. Our home insurance then doubled :(

If your not going to claim for £3k, what would you claim for? Doesn't seem much point in having insurance if you don't claim. Your premium probably won't increase as much as you think.

Lolalala123 · 21/12/2023 18:41

@Ohmylovejune This is the worry. I’m sorry this happened to you and this is what I’m afraid will happen to us.

How much are your premiums and how much do you anticipate them going up if you claim. A £3K claim seems well worth claiming for to me.

Lolalala123 · 21/12/2023 18:59

@CheeseCakeSunflowers current premium is about £270. I think actually thinking about it more - I would’ve had to declare the burglary anyway so the premium would most likely have gone up anyway, so probably worth claiming.

Claim and then shop around for another insurer when the policy is up for renewal.

Ohtobetwentytwo · 21/12/2023 19:47

Try and look at it this way....

If they give you £5k, do you think your premiums will go up by £5k over, say, the next 5 years? They would have charge you an extra £500 for 10 years for you to be worse off.

You will likely come out of it better off than paying for it yourself.

Lolalala123 · 21/12/2023 22:01

@Ohtobetwentytwo yes, that’s sound thinking. Thank you.
