To travel to see family. Baby had diarrhoea BUT there is a backstory

So baby had one MASSIVE sick Monday night, then a bad nappy early Tuesday morning. Assumed Christmas would be cancelled, but he was absolutely fine the rest of the day Tuesday, and all day Wednesday. At no point was he unwell in himself or feverish or anything like that - just his normal boisterous, playful antics. Neither me, his dad or his 3yo brother have been ill either. Today he did a normal poo whilst having his breakfast. He had a MASSIVE breakfast - I think he has a bit of a tendency to over-indulge. After his breakfast, he did another poo, but this time a diarrhoea 😑A bit mucusy too, if that makes a difference. Changed him again, he had 6 oz formula and is now peacefully asleep.

We haven't taken him out since Monday when he was sick, and his brother hasn't been out either, just in case he was a carrier. So don't think he would have picked it anything new.

He did have a proper stomach bug about three weeks ago, but that cleared up.

I'd be gutted to miss Christmas, but obviously if he is ill that's what we'll have to do. I'd rather that than make everyone ill where we're supposed to be travelling to. On the other hand, I'm not convinced he is actually ill. It comes across more that his tummy is a bit unsettled since the actual bug he had a few weeks ago (that one was pretty horrendous). WWYD? Obviously assuming no more sick or bad nappies today.

Is he on any medication? Even calpol makes my LO's tummy a bit funny.

It's also still 4 days till Christmas. Even if he has more diarrhoea today, I think you'd be absolutely fine to travel on Christmas eve, or even Saturday.

QS90 · 21/12/2023 12:14

Should have said, we're supposed to be travelling tonight. I'm actually halfway through packing, don't know whether to stop or not! 😭

No medication, although last week and week before he had a moderate amount of Calpol and Neurofen, for teething.

Some kids/people are more prone to occasionally being sick or having 'loose stools' than other people; from overeating, from coughing, from digestive systems being disrupted by previous bugs and the gut flora being out of whack and son on. If he hasn't been sick since Monday, is eating well and seemingly his normal self, no temp or anything, I wouldn't assume some loose nappies were for an infectious reason.

EdenGlen · 21/12/2023 12:23

Mine always had temperatures/colds/upset stomachs when teething so I would assume it was that if the rest of you have been fine.

kimchio · 21/12/2023 12:25

What's the backstory?

QS90 · 21/12/2023 12:26

That's reassuring, thanks.

I'm hoping if it isn't infectious, that he doesn't have some sort of intolerance brewing either 😕

What's the backstory?

Just in the first post - the illness a few weeks ago, and Monday etc.

How old is the baby?

Babies puke and poo in weird ways all the time, it wouldn’t cross my mind to cancel anything. Presuming he’s well in himself.

Notimeforaname · 21/12/2023 12:30

I would continue packing and unless he got sick again, I'd carry on with the plan.

QS90 · 21/12/2023 12:31

He's coming up to a year. Part of what we're travelling for is his birthday.

Stomach bugs can sometimes trigger temporary lactose intolerance. And I probably wouldn't rule out other allergens potentially. The fact you mentioned mucus made me 🤔.

I'd probably check in with the family you're travelling to, but I'd be tempted to go and I'm pretty risk averse with these things.

EdgarsTale · 21/12/2023 12:37

I’d check with family you’re seeing. It isn’t fair to potentially infect everyone else.

QS90 · 21/12/2023 12:40

Yes, will definitely check with my mum. Can't check with everyone, as there are so many people who will be there over the week.

She's at work until 4pm though, so can't speak to her yet.

Temporary lactose intolerance was my initial thought too. I'd reduce how much lactose he's getting and carry on with your trip. If he's still having mucousy poos in the new year talk to your GP as it can be a sign of a food intolerance.

adnabaam · 21/12/2023 12:52

Even if he has got a bug I think the potential of it being passed on seems minimal. He's in nappies which you will be changing and can wash hands throughly - different from relying on a young child to do that well. Vomiting would be harder to control but it doesn't seem like he is doing that.

mynameiscalypso · 21/12/2023 12:53

I'd happily go personally. I often found DS has a day or two of an unsettled tummy after a sick bug especially if he ate a lot.

QS90 · 21/12/2023 12:58

Thank-you wise mumsnetters 😊

Will carry on packing then, and still go, assuming no more sick, and mum giving it her blessing.

OP posts:
Anycrispsleft · 21/12/2023 13:14

I was going to ask if he was teething because that can cause dodgy poos, and then saw in one of your updates that yes he is. So I would say it's fine but check with your mum. Sure it's to be expected if you're meeting an older baby or toddler - they're never more than a week or so away from the next bug anyway!
