to ask a very basic tax question

Hi, I should probably know the answer to my query, and I have gone on the HMRC website, but is it true that one can only claim the marriage allowance if both of the couple are earning less than £12,570 per year?
Sorry if you all find my question incredible, but if I don’t know an answer, then hopefully you’ll all be kind enough to answer without judging my ignorance 🫣
TIA

One to be Basic Rate taxpayer, the other to have income below £12,570 so they have some unused Personal Allowance to gift to the BR taxpayer.

Sorry, that should say, that in the case I’m querying, both partners earn over the threshold I was told.

I earn over the threshold, my husband is below it, so he applied for the married tax allowance, which was quite easy.

If both were under the threshold there would be nothing to claim because no-one is paying tax.

If both were above the threshold there’s nothing to claim because they’re both already using their full tax free allowance.

If one is below the threshold, the other person who is above the threshold can use up the rest of the first person’s tax free allowance.

Thank you all so much for your replies.
I have much more understanding of how it works now, and not worrying about a couple who might've been struggling.
Much appreciated 🥰
