Would you eat a Christmas pudding that expired at Easter this year?

We didn't eat it last year. My mum was dying at Christmas and it wasn't very Christmassy. It got shoved into a cupboard.

Wondering if the booze content means it's perfectly fine to eat now about 9 months later? Or is the amount of brandy that goes into a supermarket Christmas pud so miniscule it will be a sad mouldy lump? Xmas Grin

Feeling devastated and bereaved anyway this year, so it doesn't really matter a jot if it should be binned, but thought I'd check as don't like food wast and live abroad where I can't buy puddings locally.

I would think it's fine as long as the seal is still tight

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/12/2023 21:11

I would - they keep for years, ime.

Ablondiebutagoody · 20/12/2023 21:11

I would give it a sniff first then eat it

Ironsoup · 20/12/2023 21:11

Is it a best before date?
If yes, fine to eat.

I'd eat it.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 20/12/2023 21:11

I would, is it a best before date? I agree, Christmas puddings keep for years.

ToThineOwnSelf · 20/12/2023 21:16

It will be even better now!

ilovesooty · 20/12/2023 21:16

I've got one in the cupboard. No idea when it expired but I intend to eat it anyway.

Gravelshoveling · 20/12/2023 21:17

Extra matured
Will be lovely
Did this with one of my puds. They keep for years

Mumaway · 20/12/2023 21:19

I would definitely eat it (assuming the seal hadn't broken and it was mouldy). Last year we had 4-years-ago pudding that I found in the back of the cupboard. It was a really posh one so I didn't want to throw it out!!

Hoglet70 · 20/12/2023 21:22

My Mum would!

WrigglyDonCat · 20/12/2023 21:25

My Gran used only make Christmas puddings every other year. Made two, one for this year, one for next.

So add in all the preservatives as well as alcohol in a commercial one and it should be more than fine.

SnowsFalling · 20/12/2023 21:33

Bizarrely, DS and DH have just eaten a supermarket Xmas pudding BBE March 2023 tonight.
They both declared it delicious.

Heat it. Have a look. Have a taste. Eat or bin then. I bet you will be fine.

LoreleiG · 20/12/2023 21:39

Yes I would and I am really paranoid about this sort of thing.

KohlaParasaurus · 20/12/2023 21:41

Yes, without hesitation.

HaveToHaveTheLastWord · 20/12/2023 22:14

I literally had this exact conversation about a Christmas pudding in our cupboard (exp Mar 23) with my DH about 2 hours ago, and the consensus was "yes" 😆

Tinkerbellflowers · 20/12/2023 22:16

Our christmas pudding is best before March 2023. I plan to serve it, but I have bought a new one as a backup.

Belindabelle · 20/12/2023 22:20

I always buy my Christmas pudding in the sales in January. They always say best before April. They always taste lovely and rich. No ill effects yet.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 20/12/2023 22:53

If its well sealed and stored in a cool place it will be fine. We had a 4 year old one last year that had been hiding at the back of the cupboard and couldn't tell any difference.

Redshoeblueshoe · 20/12/2023 22:56

Supermarkets charge more for more mature ones. I'd eat it

Honeyroar · 20/12/2023 23:08

We’ve eaten plenty that were much more out of date. As long as it’s not mouldy or rock hard, you know/ obviously off, it’ll be fine.

WashingAt30 · 20/12/2023 23:08

Best before does not mean poisonous after. It just means it won't taste quite as good after the date. Use by is the one you have to abide by more strictly.

SalviaDivinorum · 20/12/2023 23:09

I served one that was 10 years out of date. It was perfectly edible but the texture was a bit off so I wouldn't recommend keeping them that long

Easter is nothing! I'd expect it to be still perfect

muckymayhem · 20/12/2023 23:10

My DH would definitely eat it. I hate the stuff so wouldn't eat it at all :) just cook it / heat it and see but maybe have a backup just in case.

User176386233 · 20/12/2023 23:11

Hell yeah it'll be starting to mature nicely!

Hairofthemonster · 20/12/2023 23:12

Oh this all sounds good then! Pleased with my extra mature pudding option!

Thank you.
