If you could leave a review on your Landlord

I SO wish there was a place where you could leave a review for your Landlord once your tenancy is up.

I’ve rented three times in my life. My first two Landlords were great. They actually did their job properly and were extremely on the ball. Absolutely no complaints and life was great. My current Landlord? My God. He is just awful. I can’t even explain the amount of things we’ve experienced in this property that hasn’t been up to par. Even the EA have to constantly hassle him and remind him of his responsibilities as he tries not to spend money on repairs. I constantly feel stressed and my anxiety is so much worse since living here.

It just made me wonder, if you could leave a review for your current (or previous LL), what would your review say? Mine would say, ‘don’t ever live here!! He’d leave you with no running water if he could get away with it😳’

I’m a LL, I think it’s a good idea . Get tired of everyone thinking all LLs are evil.

Floopani · 20/12/2023 21:04

I have had several absolutely wonderful LLs in the past. I moved heaven and earth to ensure the properties were returned to them in immaculate condition at the end of my tenancy. My current one, could not give a flying fuck. I will be returning the energy when I move out shortly to the house I just bought. I definitely wish I could leave LLs a review to prevent others having to go through a crappy time.

Mine is great, as is the letting agency. All maintenance things dealt with really promptly. To the extent that as l much as I want to buy my own place and hope my purchase goes through, I’m going to miss having one person to call and sort out all repairs for free!

Coatscoatscoast · 20/12/2023 21:09

Tenants require references to rent somewhere, I think landlords should have to provide them too. I’ve had a mixture of landlords from wonderful to utter arseholes who would let me die from inhaling mould before fixing anything. Plenty seem to forget they’re being paid for a service - the tenant is a customer!

TrickyD · 20/12/2023 21:33

Our tenants had to move suddenly for employment reasons. This is the correspondence between me and the agent re. deposit.

Hello AgentX
Yes, deductions will not be required. If you contact the previous tenants please let them know how much we appreciated the way they looked after the property.

Agent’s reply:
Hello LandlordX
Your tenant advised: We also want to thank them for being great landlords and so kind and understanding.

How lovely!

My landlady is absolutely lovely, I know I'm very lucky to have her. She's never put the rent up in the 11+ years I've lived here, is always quick to sort any issues out and even gives her tenants Christmas presents. I've had arsehole landlords in the past though.

Ditto. I know I'm a good LL because tenants want to stay for years, they ask for a house for their family/friends so I have a permanent waiting list and I've been invited to 2 weddings and I'm even a Godmother to one little girl who has lived in one of my houses all her life. I have a maintenance man who if there are any issues goes to deal with my properties as a priority because I give him most of my work everything except gas and electrics and I use specialist services for those. I run the company myself because I don't trust an agent to do a good enough job.

I love this!

I personally think it’s so important to have a good tenant/LL relationship so I really struggle with the fact that mine is such an arse. It’s infuriating to me

Same.

Mine would include

  • don't lose your job and claim benefits because the landlord will try and chase you out of the house with a baseball bat - because he's already claiming for five other tenants that he invented!

-he's so thorough with the 'cleaning service' that he charges you for on leaving, thats why you'll get bonus items to find when you move in, like a large green dildo in the bedroom

-Fixes everything with glue/sealant. Water running down the walls? No problem, £5 tube should do the trick.

-provides free mushrooms under the bath

-allows pets, as long as they are mice or rats.

-very friendly. Let's himself in as and when, including into your bedroom when you're asleep after a nightshift

  • may sell your home and give builders a key to start renovations while you're still living in it, because he doesn't understand how tenancies work.

I rented rooms in HMO properties for many years, the landlords were almost always shocking. Feel very lucky that I was able to get to a point that I could buy and not have to worry about landlords again.

Catsknowbest · 20/12/2023 22:35

Our last landlord caused me similar anxiety. Lots of disrepair and repair issues. We moved earlier this year due to partner having a stroke end of 2021 and needing accessible accomodation and were lucky enough with some support (he's a forces veteran) to get rehoused in a bungalow. When I told our landlord 2 years ago that he had had a stroke and had to stop work they really took advantage. Despite a struggle rent was never late or missed. But suddenly repairs didn't matter and worse was when they started to lie about repairs they'd promised. Was so relieved to get out of cold, draughty house with so many issues Two days later they re let it with no more than a lick of paint inside and for £150 a month more. They could because there is a housing shortage but if that house ever gets checked for rental standard it will fail.

Oh God yes, mine is exactly the same. Your list is awful and quite worrying @Bridgertonned it’s great to hear that you’ve been able to purchase your own property. I’m jealous!

There are already numerous sites where you can review your landlord. Google ‘review landlord’ and loads will come up; they aren’t hard to find.

CeeChynaa · 21/12/2023 20:53

@10HailMarys can you name the LL or is that not allowed? I better go and have a look then!

hss the most talented husband ever: she says she will send round the painter, it’s her husband. She says she will send round the gardener, it’s her husband. The heating engineer, it’s her husband. The joiner, it’s her husband.

unfortunately despite his many titles, he was shit at them all.

Landlord 1) Very good - efficient, professional, contactable, friendly, slightly greedy - telling us the rent was going up and then telling us on the last day that he'd hoped we'd "make him an offer" so we could stay took him down in my estimation.

Landlord 2) Unseen but used a decent managing agency. Flat not the best but was ok. Didn't raise the rent at all. Only cared that we paid up. Overall ok.

Landlord 3) Lazy scum. Begging your two female tenants- who both work out of the home to keep the (heavy framed and big enough to climb through) windows open all the time to avoid mould and getting the managing agency to constantly bang on about mould above all else to the point where it's clear that there is obviously a real issue with the building suggests an issue you haven't fixed. Blaming the tenants for mould by having a condenser tumble dryer despite it being one of the dampest autumns on record, refusing to buy dehumidifiers for the property and then threatening to go after your tenants for damages after they've asked for compensation for ruined goods makes you a very poor excuse of a human being.
