Frozen turkey crown - unacceptable?

Birdbuggerup · 20/12/2023 19:30

I’m a vegetarian, hosting Christmas for the first time.

I ate meat until I was 20 so I’m not precious about it and told the wider family who are coming to us that I’d happily do turkey and pigs in blankets.

I bought a frozen turkey crown, pre stuffed with bacon on it etc, believing (maybe stupidly) that this would be fairly easy. When I mentioned this at work everyone was horrified at the prospect of frozen turkey and acted like I was serving spam. Is a frozen turkey crown that bad? I thought it was quite expensive (£45 to serve 4-6) but apparently that’s pretty cheap?

I don’t want to ruin my family’s Christmas by serving something atrocious. I know they’d all say it’s fine but if I should pick up a fresh one please let me know whilst I still have time!

thanks in advance - I feel pretty bloody daft!

It’s perfectly fine! Make sure it’s defrosted in time and they won’t be able to tell the difference

StillWantingADog · 20/12/2023 19:31

Pretty sure this is what my parents do every year

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/12/2023 19:32

It sounds absolutely fine to me!

WhereIsBebèsChambre · 20/12/2023 19:32

It's absolutely fine, they wouldn't be hugely popular of they weren't! Just follow the instructions well re defrosting!

BCBird · 20/12/2023 19:32

Perfectly fine. Just allow longer than it says to defrost it IME

DilemmaDelilah · 20/12/2023 19:32

It's what I always get and it will be absolutely fine!

greengreengrass25 · 20/12/2023 19:32

We've got one from Sainsbury's

christmassausages · 20/12/2023 19:32

I've got a frozen turkey breast for Christmas day. Mine was 5.99. Your 45.00 one sounds good with the stuffing, etc.

VeganNugsNotDrugs · 20/12/2023 19:33

It's fine. And no bones or slimy bits to deal with. And you certainly don't want to be fisting a turkey at 5am on Christmas morning

curtaintwitcher78 · 20/12/2023 19:34

They're patronising you because you're a vegetarian and they think they 'know' meat. As with veg, frozen is fresher than fresh. Sod em.

KissTheRains · 20/12/2023 19:34

Tell your colleagues to go fuck their turkey holes.

I'm having Gammon.

🤪

RosaElize · 20/12/2023 19:34

I cook a lot and host Christmas a lot, and 9/10 I will opt for frozen turkey. I’m convinced it’s more moist

Iamblossom · 20/12/2023 19:35

Just bought ours today, a massive one from Lidl, £30

PinkPlantCase · 20/12/2023 19:37

This is a completely reasonable and normal thing to do

wysen · 20/12/2023 19:37

I think that would be fine, but I'm questioning how on earth it's that expensive?
I've got a fresh turkey crown of a similar size that is costing half that...

PictureOfAPig · 20/12/2023 19:40

It's fine, it'll be lovely. It is expensive though- you can get a large free range frozen turkey (whole thing) for less than that.

Me too, about £6 from Aldi although I bought two for leftovers 😋

OP your colleagues sound like awful snobs, you've been very generous to spend that much on the turkey.

PinkiOcelot · 20/12/2023 19:43

I’ve bought a frozen turkey crown from Aldi for £15.99. Perfectly fine. Your colleagues are being ridiculous!

Curious where you bought it from for that price though?

AnnaMagnani · 20/12/2023 19:44

Lots of people will make a fuss about eating frozen meat.

99.99% of them cannot tell the difference between frozen and chiller cabinet once it has been cooked.

Also turkey is incredibly boring and hard to cook so it isn't dry - your turkey crown sounds like an excellent buy, tasty and solving a lot of problems.

Agreed! Perfectly fine, and give it some extra time to defrost

XmasPartyhat · 20/12/2023 19:49

Your colleagues are just snobs.

CoatOfArms · 20/12/2023 19:54

We're having a frozen one. We had a fresh one from M&S the last two years and it wasn't that great.

Ducksinthebath · 20/12/2023 19:55

All the supermarket chilled ones have been frozen at some point as well. Unless people genuinely believe there is mass cull of turkeys over the course of the two days right before they choose to buy their bird.

Just like most things, you get what you pay for. A bargain basement fresh bird is never going to be better than a decent frozen one. FWIW Waitrose do an excellent cook from frozen crown for 6 for £25 but pull it in mid-December to stock much more expensive but virtually identical “Christmas” turkey crowns. I buy mine in November and freeze it until 25th and no one has ever said anything but great things.

Calabou · 20/12/2023 19:55

Nothing wrong with frozen turkey. Although £45 for a crown, even with the trimmings, is hideously expensive!

Theduchy · 20/12/2023 19:56

Frozen turkey crown is what we do every year! Never had any complaints.
