Was this a stupid suggestion or AIBU?

DH has once again gotten another chip on his shoulder over the fact I told him that a suggestion was "ridiculous". One of DC(2)s Christmas present involves some stickers onto bits of plastic which, having read the reviews, are prone to coming off almost immediately on playing. The fix people have used is decoupage glue over the top to seal the sticker, so I told DH I'd go get some tomorrow. He asked why I don't just use superglue.

Superglue, to finish/seal stickers on a 2 year old's toy? AIBU to have called it ridiculous on the basis superglue isn't a finishing product, it's messy as hell at the best of times let alone if you're after a thin layer of it, and it's pretty nasty stuff from a chemical point of view? He's genuinely giving me the silent treatment now.

Superglue doesn't adhere to all plastics. You'd need to know what types were involved.

If there are reviews recommending a specific type of glue then I'd stick (sorry) with that.

Gorilla super glue does. And remember OP is using it as a sealant. The sticker will stick itself.

I think you're both ridiculous for arguing over fucking glue. Who has the energy?

Seriously impressed with MN glue-based knowledges (/worrying about widespread, mis-spent youth 😱)

I do alot of modelling. Making models that is.

How would you feel if he called you ridiculous and had a go at you for getting your child a toy that doesn't work properly but you wouldn't return it? Because that to me seems like an easier option than faffing around with glue.

And decoupage glue also has chemicals in it. Why would you think it doesn't?

WhichOneGoes · 20/12/2023 01:06

Nail varnish might be a better option. You could have it with glitter in too!

I think it's not nice to call someone's suggestion ridiculous but it's also not nice (and ridiculous) to do the silent treatment

I think kids craft glue. It is safe but it will be licked by a 2 year old. The stickers will fall off but the kids imagination will remain.

YABU because you say he has "once again" got a chip on his shoulder about it. Suggesting that you have done this before, seen that it upsets him, and then done it again, without any need. It's an overreaction anyway, but saying it to someone you know it will wind up is insensitive.

Bippitybobbityboing · 20/12/2023 06:34

Mmm the fact that you use "yet again" and called him "ridiculous" have you slipped into a pattern where you put him down then he gives you the silent treatment?

None of it sounds healthy, maybe make it a New Year's resolution for both of you to try to communicate better?

Hesma · 20/12/2023 06:38

He was only trying to help and you were rude. Do you have a history of demeaning him? If so I totally get that he’s had enough of being made to feel small.
