Christmas stock

Wife2b · 19/12/2023 20:12

Not a thread for Grinches or Scrooges 🤣

Stores start stocking their shelves with Christmas stuff from August onwards which is stupidly early. Yet every year the last week to Christmas, stock is pretty much gone - when everyone is shopping. Surely the heavy discounts etc would be better after Christmas?

I’m miffed that I fancy a tub of roses on Christmas Eve with a Christmas film on - can’t find a tub anywhere!! Bought my little girl a personalised sack, product was poor quality so I asked for a replacement - they agreed but then there was no stock left (this was a week ago). Nevermind, will get one next year.

AIBU?

I agree. I tried to buy wrapping paper tonight and had to go to three shops before I found any!

VisionsOfSplendour · 19/12/2023 20:26

I'm not quite clear what you point is, why can't you buy what you need earlier? It's not the shops fault that people are buying stuff

I was shopping on Saturday and there were boxes of wrapping paper in all the shops it seemed like, loads in Tesco, Primark and Aldi, I actually thought how we're they going to sell it all, maybe it all went yesterday

Coolstorysis · 19/12/2023 20:37

It's a bit daft tbh. Although I have enjoyed very discounted lindt goods from the local Sainsbury's after easter/Christmas for a few years, maybe this is the year they will learn Sad

luckylavender · 19/12/2023 20:39

Far better for retailers to sell their stock in the current climate. Get in earlier!

Well because I didn’t know what I wanted earlier. I’m not even a late shopper - gifts all bought and wrapped by beginning of December. But I just thought tonight I fancy some Roses, I didn’t realise they’d all be sold out by now! My point is that it’s silly they’re on the shelves for months beforehand but in the actual run up to Christmas, the shelves are bare. Surely that means not enough are being made for demand??

What I can't work out is where all the chocolate oranges have gone this year!

And my other big mystery is what happens to all the Advent Calendars. I needed to buy an extra one on 1 Dec, and no-where had one (not even newly off display but still in the back)

Full size Terry's chocolate orange? Baskets full in my local Tesco

ColettesEarrings · 19/12/2023 21:35

Nearly 50 tubs each of Roses, Quality Street, and Celebrations in my Sainsburys...

Out of interest I looked online and Tesco is showing then as OOS but all the other supermarkets have them in stock

Better for retailers to sell out and have a few disappointed shoppers than have stock left over, it's been like that with Easter Eggs for a few years now, you need to get in early

RoseMartha · 19/12/2023 21:40

I had trouble buying stamps last week. Went to 6 places. No one had any. These were shops not post offices however.

SomeoneYouLoved · 19/12/2023 21:59

They need to make room for the Easter Eggs 😂

Where are you - absolute drought here!

Ended up buying a tray of 24 from Amazon, and of course I've eaten several already!

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 19/12/2023 22:24

Yep.
See also Easter Eggs and Good Friday. Just buy them on January 6th.

Vicliz24 · 19/12/2023 22:32

I had to drive to four different shops looking for chocolate oranges on Saturday. I agree I don't want to look at Christmas things on august bank holiday.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 19/12/2023 22:47

I run a food bank. This week we received in surplus from three major supermarkets:

mince pies
pigs in blankets
carrots, parsnips, brussels
roses, heroes
turkeys
stuffing
satsumas

etc.

All stock going unsold.

You can buy Roses all year round. They aren't just a Christmas thing.
