I am wondering if this is what I had last December

Nearly a week of a stinking cold with endless snot

About 2 days when I thought it was over

Then the I think 3 or 4 week long cough started. The cough that was so grim I pulled an intercostal muscle that of course hurt to move/sneeze/get up. I got antibiotics to start after a day or 2 as I thought it was a chest infection. Oh no definitely not

I had a few days off sick because I just couldn't stay awake at the start

Tested for COVID a few times, all negative

I found sudafed nasal spray and broncho stop cough mixture helped slightly. It was worse than COVID.

EatenbytheYuleCat · 19/12/2023 08:55

5 weeks and counting here. Started with what I'm pretty sure was the flu in early November - we all had covid already in October, LFTs were negative and DH, who'd had a flu jab in October, didn't catch it. Hit me and DS like a bus, in bed for a day or two, felt dreadful for 5 days and horrible cough and fatigue for a fortnight. Since then DS has brought home at least 2 separate cold from school, which DH also got. They're just being layered on top of each other. I don't know where one starts and the other stops.

KnowThyself · 19/12/2023 08:57

I had an awful heavy cold with those symptoms and my sinus was in a lot of pain. I am prone to sinusitis so have become quite good at massaging my face, steam it a lot and also eat wasabi. When very bad I will do a saline nasal rinse, you must used cooled boiled water. Also dose myself up with vitamin c.

I spent three days in bed and did not feel fully recovered for a further week. So about 10 days in total. I didn’t eat much for the first 3 days at all.

Having to still keep going is what prolongs illness and makes illness worse. So anyone in those small children years can possibly ends up unwell for longer and to a deeper depth sometimes. I’m a great believer in going to bed when unwell, it does mean you need another capable adult around though.

Lordofmyflies · 19/12/2023 08:59

It took me about a week to be able to function well again. First 2 days in bed, 5 days moping around moaning and a further week of bed coughing. Still have a residual cough 6 weeks later but feel fine in myself.

piscofrisco · 19/12/2023 08:59

I hate to tel you this but I came down with the exact thing 5 weeks ago and only this weekend past have I started to feel better.
I still can't hear out of one ear except for tinnitus and I'm still easily tired but deffo on the mend. I hope it passed quicker for you.

Yes! Day 5 i think of the really rough bit. No sign of it going anywhere. My throat is killing me!

EatenbytheYuleCat · 19/12/2023 19:22

Completely agree with @KnowThyself - if I had taken a few days off early on and kept DS home for a few more days too, to recover properly, I bet I wouldn't be starting my 6th week of illness now. You just feel like you can't take the time. But it's self defeating in the long run.

Anyone in the early days of this, try and do whatever you can to rest and give yourself a decent chance to fight it off quickly. Not easy at this time of year though!

bungletru · 19/12/2023 19:23

Took me 10-14 days… bloody awful.
wishing you well

bungletru · 19/12/2023 19:24

I should add, i had been taking all the remedies. Garlic, ginger shots, spicy foods, paracetamol regularly, nasal sprays

TurkeyMalarkey · 19/12/2023 19:26

I’ve had a hacking dry cough, heavy cold, and on/off temperature for two weeks now. Negative covid tests, but both my teens have had (and recovered from!) covid while I’ve been unwell, so not convinced…

Soldiering on with work. Cough has turned a bit chesty now and temperature not as wacky. Hope it all fucks off before Christmas so I can actually enjoy my break!

bryceQ · 19/12/2023 19:27

I'm in week two and it's been absolutely vile and my throat is sore again! It also seems to have triggered my migraines, I've had them every day . I'm demented.

What the hell is this bug?!?!

spiderlight · 19/12/2023 19:28

@MadMadCatLady27 - I had that last December. I've never felt so ill in my life. The cough lasted about 4 or 5 weeks, day and night, and at the worst point my DH had to cut up my food for me because I was so weak and exhausted. I felt as though I was somehow physically detached from my body - on the worst day I genuinely wondered if I was dying, but I felt too dreadful to care. In retrospect I think it was bronchitis at the very least. How I did any Christmas prep at all, I do not know!! Grim. I hope everyone who has this year's version feels better soon.

Ofcourseshecan · 19/12/2023 19:36

Saturday, I’d had an occasional barely noticeable little cough. Saturday night, I couldn’t sleep, coughing, joints aching. Sunday, coughing my lungs out and too weak to stand up, but still breathing freely through my nose. Monday and today, totally floored, nose streaming and still coughing till I retch. Covid test clear.

Taking ibuprofen and soothing cough mixture as GP told me long ago my coughs are caused by inflammation. So ibuprofen being an anti-inflammatory should ease the inflammation, with the cough-soothing medicine helping to break the cycle of coughing exacerbating the inflammation.

Best of luck, everyone.

RaininSummer · 19/12/2023 19:39

Three and a half weeks now and still congested and coughing.

Mylobsterteapot · 19/12/2023 19:46

I’m 24 hours in. My joints hurt, my throat is raw and I feel like I’ve been run over by a bus. I had bronchitis two weeks ago, and I am only just feeling well again.

Summerpeachblossom · 19/12/2023 19:49

3.5 weeks. It's rubbish.

Claricestarling1 · 19/12/2023 19:51

On week 5 over here..the “cold” has gone but the cough is still hanging on

Dee03 · 19/12/2023 19:55

Day 9 for me.
Feel better than i did and actually ventured outside today but i still have the cough, and my ribs still hurt from the constant coughing.

CruisingForAMusing · 19/12/2023 19:55

10 weeks for me so far.
I'm a very fit healthy person and have never experienced anything like it.
I've lost my voice through coughing again today and have cancelled my evening plans (again) to get back in the gym because I feel like I have swollen glands and a gammy throat.
I've taken a course of antibiotics and they improved things slightly.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/12/2023 20:06

14 weeks and counting...had this 'cold' in September and I am still tired, coughing, headachey, full of catarrh and FED UP. I take all the vitamins and I've had 2 blood tests in this time period which said I was OK, apparently.

TortillaChipAddict · 19/12/2023 20:11

I had this, tested positive for covid week 2 of it, 2 weeks later feel much better but felt like it was endless before this

ThatsGoingToHurt · 19/12/2023 20:11

I’m on day 13 and still coughing. I would say that I feel about 75% at the moment. Able to go to work but then only able to do the minimum at home.

CaputDraconis · 20/12/2023 16:51

I went to the pharmacist for advice earlier as I am on day 13 and feel awful. He suggested Benylin 4 Flu tablets. They are drowsy so can't drive when taking them, but I feel so much better already after only 2 doses.
