To think there is something a bit strange about leaving your curtains shut all day, every day?

I live opposite some flats, and over the past year or so (I've got a small baby, I don't get out much) I've noticed that the majority of the windows always have their curtains drawn. Well, except for the flat occupied by the granny in a vest who stares at my house for several hours a day...

I always open all the curtains in my house as soon as we get up for the day - it feels wrong not to. Seriously though, there are some flats over there that never have the curtains open, but why not? This is destined to be one of life's little mysteries, isn't it?

Dh would leave our curtains closed most days because he doesn't care if it is natural or electric light.. I always open the curtains as soon as I come downstairs but if I have a lie in (rare but does happen sometimes) they are all closed when I come down.

goodcatholicgirl · 15/03/2008 20:01

Our curtains often stay shut....
DH works nights
DD naps in the daytime
In winter, it's dark when I leave the house and dark when I get home, don't see the point!!!
Although, tbh, thinking about it, we always open curtains at front of house (visible) it is by a coincidence that the ones we don't open ar at the back of the house and we are not overlooked at all at the back, so no-one would ever know IYSWIM.

I love natural light too (believe it or not!)
I get cross when DH shuts downstairs curtains when it only just starts getting dusky, cos he's obssessed that people can see in. We live in a small, quiet cul-de sac. He is clearly mad.

tinylady · 15/03/2008 20:02

I imagine they are vampires and only draw their curtains to open the window when hunger strikes and they take flight....the children of the night, what sweet music they make...AAARRRGGHH!!(Heaving bosom, sculptured jaw, fangs, blood)
Fangs for nothing
I think I am a pair of curtains?
Pull yourself together

My neighbour across the street from me has lived there for at least 4 years, maybe 5. There are blinds at every window that are premanently closed and I have never, ever in all the years she's lived there seen a window open. She has 2 cats in the house that are indoor cats, I don't want to even imagine what the house must smell like.

My dd's bedroom curtains are rarely open this is because we live in a ground floor flat and her bike is in her bedroom. We keep the curtains shut incase some looks in sees the bike then decides to break in and steal it.

lucyellensmum · 15/03/2008 21:57

I have my curtains drawn all day everyday, simply because this room, the one i am in is only used as a study/office/general shit heap and we dont use it during the day, so never bothered opening curtains. Shame really, it gets lots of light. Our living room is at the side of the house, well in the middle, the windows are at the side. The house looks like it is either haunted or lived in by an old lady with 70 cats. I dont have any cats though.

PinkPussyCat · 15/03/2008 22:06

I work nights every other month and our curtains are often closed all day due to this, but I'm so tired when I get in I don't care!

Mouselady - I would love to hear your 6-9am routine as it's my dream to become borderline prissy and neurotic! My house could do with a good dose of orderliness...

BexieID · 15/03/2008 23:17

You don't live opposite me do you? Although I can't imagine my next door neigbour, who is a granny, staring at your house wearing a vest and she does work.

Um, well we tend to keep ours drawn. The curtain rail is so stiff it's hard to draw the curtains. I'm so used to keeping the living room ones drawn as I can see into the flats opposite and didn't think abyone would appreciate seeing my sat here breastfeeding! Plus the weather is soo depressing, I don't want to see it!

ExtraFancy · 15/03/2008 23:19

I am beginning to think I am the strange one for keeping my curtains open! ;)

PS I'm not really that nosey, just that my PC is in the study which faces the flats, and I'm trying to write a novel so I spend a lot of time sat here procrastinating

Dh would be happy to leave ours shut all day. Drives me up the wall - it's just part of getting up in the morning. There's something scuzzy about having the curtains closed when there's daylight outside!

Although I do shut them if I'm in the sitting room between mid-morning and mid-afternoon as the sun's just too bright (room's on the first floor).

madamez · 15/03/2008 23:28

My mum believes in keeping curtains shut to stop the sunlight fading furniture/carpets/etc. But some people close their curtains all day cos they work nights.

ExtraFancy · 15/03/2008 23:34

StarlightMckenzie just the opposite actually! Wahing up has been known to live on the worktop for two days while DH and I fight over whose turn it is

I have to open all the blinds/curtains or I start to feel grubby ! Passers by can see in from one side but I don't care, its normally just the neighbours and they smile as DS normally waves at them - I don't do anything exciting enough to hide.

Perhaps all the flats are rented out to some dudes making Porn films and the old lady is on the look out in case the cops cruise by ..... looking for some dudes making porn films !

scottishmummy · 15/03/2008 23:59

love the thought of ExtraFancy gawping at ole vest wearing granny who she thinks is gawping at her.maybe the flats keep their curtains closed because they heard their is right ole nosy bint staring in and chuntering about curtains

Maybe I should try and communicate with her via semaphore. I wil lask her if her neighbours are porn stars/weed growers/night shift workers. Then I will close all my curtains and hide from her.

Ripeberry · 16/03/2008 10:39

Lots of people keep their curtains closed because they don't want people seing them.
I have net curtains up (yes very old fashioned)
But at least i can look out without people looking at me.
What freaks me out, is the amount of people who don't close their curtains at night, even on busy roads.
It's like a big advertisement for thieves, look at what i've got in my house! Isn't it nice! bet you wish you had my stuff!...yeah right.
At night, the curtains are closed and stay closed.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 16/03/2008 10:43

As we are a little overlooked, until we got a big fence and blinds, we generaly kept our curtains closed as well as I hate the idea of people looking into my home.
