Dishwashersaurous · 18/12/2023 13:02

Aibu to be completely confused.

I just moved my cake tin and discovered a black mark on the wooden worktop.

Tins were stone cold and I've no idea what has caused it.

It's the same size as the tin but still no idea how it got there

Or how to get rid of it. Help. Please

Help me get this stain off worktop

I can't help, we have the same, or similar and my wife has stained all of them, including leaving a handful of coins in tea she spilled!

Pink Stuff might help. Not sure if you can use it on wood though. I use it to get stains of our quartz worktop and it works amazing.

If it's real wood, you could also sand it.

Smleps · 18/12/2023 13:07

If it’s a solid wood worktop, then you can lightly sand it off with sandpaper.

SinnerBoy · 18/12/2023 13:11

I've sanded ours and the stain was well soaked. I had to stop before there was a dent, then re-sealed it.

Happened me with tins that handy been moved in a while. I assumed they got damp with steam in a kitchen and then reacted with the metal tin.

We actually sanded our whole worktop. It didn't cost that much and lifted the whole kitchen having it done

Petrine · 18/12/2023 13:13

What an absolute pain.

If your cake tin was aluminium it has likely caused a chemical reaction with the wood. The only way to remove the mark would be to lightly sand it.

Hope this helps

Fine sandpaper then Olmo topoil at least 5 coats.

Then buy giant trivets and leave them everywhere to prevent repeating.

Dishwashersaurous · 18/12/2023 13:26

Thanks all.

Stupid question but can cold metal, straight out of cupboard, not go on wood?

And if so why?

Brand new worktops so just learning

barkeepers friends powder will take it off

If the work top is new, you might get away with a localised sand by hand in the direction of the grain, and re-coat with the same oil or varnish, if you can find out what was used.

Otherwise ....
Use a random orbital sander, with progressively finer papers P120>P180>P240.

Remove all marks, and signs of varnish or oil.

Reseal with OSMO, Hardwax oil, or Top Oil,
3 three thin coats,
24 hours between coats
Very light sanding P240 between 1st and 2nd coat.

should last for years.

Is that an oak worktop? Oak (and some other hard woods) contains tannic acid which will react with steel, leaving dark marks. That's why any screws/nails in oak should be galvanised

If you Google "remove oak metal stains" you'll find methods on how to remove

eosmum · 18/12/2023 14:03

There is a product called Bar Keepers friend which I used to remove the black water stains. The wooden worktops are a curse to keep from staining, worst think I ever did, but this stuff is great or you'll spend your life sanding and oiling. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Keepers-Friend-Original-Stain-Remover/dp/B075CJNDSK/ref=sr_1_3?crid=62YGX518KRON&keywords=bartenders+friend+cleaner+powder&qid=1702908065&sprefix=bartenders%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-3

CranfordScones · 18/12/2023 14:14

I'd go with a very fine abrasive - start with one of those magic eraser sponges. Then, if necessary, reseal with whatever's recommended for that surface, shouldn't be necessary if you go careful.

CornishPorsche · 18/12/2023 14:17

Mine is covered in these - the worst culprits are milk bottles. It much be bacteria on those, but also any other tins with a spot of rust on them! In January I'm sanding back and resealing the whole kitchen.

Baxdream · 18/12/2023 14:18

What have you used to treat them? You look like you have other marks too . I had a wood worktop- never again!
I hope you manage to get it out

Dishwashersaurous · 18/12/2023 14:46

Thanks all.

Everyday is a learning day it seems.

Have managed to make it fade with vinegar. And have ordered bar keepers friend

Have you tried rubbing a walnut on it?
