To be annoyed a child passport is not effectively 4.5 years?

It’s so short for the fee! It used to be when you renewed any remaining time was added to your new passport. So if the old one expired in January and you renewed in November the replacement passport would be for 5 years 2 month.

Now the extra time isn’t added AND you have to renew earlier, as most places either require 6 or 3 months left on your passport or they won’t accept it. So child passports are 4.5 years in effect, and bloody expensive.

I can’t believe at this point I’m still discovering bloody issues with Brexit, what was the point people voted for

If you normally travel long haul then was always thus.

Its only an issue if you mainly holiday in Europe.

ReadyForPumpkins · 18/12/2023 11:45

Not true if long haul needs longer. I travel to visit my parents, 12 hour flight, and the validity requirement is 1 month. Also, pre-brexit, if you renew your passport earlier, the extra time is added to the 5 years.

For example, NZ https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/new-zealand/entry-requirements

PASSPORT VALIDITY:

Three months beyond the planned date of departure from New Zealand.

I agree.
it's annoying & expensive.

however, the 'adding months' thing was a british pecularity. many (most?) nationalities never had that option.

ReadyForPumpkins · 18/12/2023 12:47

I think it's a nice British touch. I feel it's the fair thing to do. But agree that it's not the norm.

Chilicabbage · 18/12/2023 12:50

Maybe they stopped it because it was causing unnecessary issues around rules of validity elsewhere

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 18/12/2023 12:51

Struggling to get excited about it either way tbh.
