Costs around £20? Planning on doing one on Christmas Eve for the first time. How do I cook it, what do we eat it with etc?

God, so many different ways 🥹
Do I buy it plain?
I would love to do in the slow cooker, do I still have to soak it and get rid of fat? Complete novice here concerning the big ham!

Here is a slow cooker one complete with recipe and video

Soak it first to remove excess salt

Boil it in cider

The next day remove skin, score the fat and brush with brown sugar/mustard concoction and bake in the oven.

I’m in the minority and loathe the Coca Cola ham , for me I pressure cook then remove most of the rind to leave a layer of fat score this and rub with honey and mustard then finish in the oven

I often do it in the slow cooker, not sure if it will fit ? But a 2 kg one fits in mine with plenty of room. You will need to soak it first even if not smoked. Then add water to half way up the sides. I put a 2kg ish one on high about 10 am then lifted out about 6 ish and finished in the oven like I said before. The stock that’s left, leave in the slow cooker and add ingredients for soup and cook over night.

I do scalloped potatoes with our ham, also salads but I’m in Australia so salads make sense.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 17/12/2023 23:00

Slow cooker either covered in cola or cider.

Boil it.

Make a honey and mustard marinade type
thing.

Rub it with said marinade type thing.

Then roast it.

We do this!

Would also not like it with salad stuff in winter

There will be so much of it that you can have it every which way you fancy. For days.

"I’m in the minority and loathe the Coca Cola ham"

Trust me, you're not in the minority. Everyone I know hates it. Vile

Ghentsummer · 17/12/2023 23:08

What size are you getting? Because what I would think of as a 'big ham' costs about £40 so for £20 it's just a regular sized ham. If it's not that big a slow cooker could be a way but if you've got the time then would recommend boiling it first, then trimming the fat and scoring what's left. Add a marinade of some sort (honey and spices maybe) and then bake in the oven for a couple of hours.

Murphs1 · 17/12/2023 23:08

I always buy sainsburys be good to yourself gammon as it’s so easy to cook and no fat, which I like. I scored it and drizzle honey on it and cover with orange slices, then roast in the oven for around an hour or hour and a half

GhostOrchid · 17/12/2023 23:11

I did the Coca Cola ham one year and didn’t think it was all that.

another vote for the slow cooker. Sit it on top of a peeled onion cut in half and maybe add a bay leaf or two. Glaze in the way described upthread.

I would serve with jacket potatoes, or maybe smaller potatoes roasted in their skins, sour cream, red cabbage braised with onions and apples and chestnut stuffing.

nocoolnamesleft · 17/12/2023 23:13

I always do it in the slow cooker with cherry coke, an onion, and some spices, then when it's done lift it out, plaster a spice/sugar mix on the fat, and roast for 30-40 mins. Lovely.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 17/12/2023 23:42

What type of ham? Serrano?

Smoked? Unsmoked?

gano · 18/12/2023 00:08

I simmer it in cherry cola. Then do a mustard honey glaze and finish it off in the oven.

MsPavlichenko · 18/12/2023 00:15

I am in my late fifties. My Granny’s tip was bring to the boil then tip water away to get rid off saltiness. Not sure that’s a thing now. Cook however you want. A different, and fabulous side is Mac n’ cheese.

For the first time ever I tried the coca cola ham, it was brilliant- ham in slow cooker, cover with real, full fat coca cola, add veg, slow cooker 4 hours high or 8 hours low, let it sit for 30 minutes wrapped in foil , slice and serve with veg, chips, potatoes- anything really.

Please could you link to the recipe? It sounds delicious.

galaxybeyond · 18/12/2023 00:19

Roast potatoes
Cauliflower cheese
Warm spiced Red cabbage

RobertaFirmino · 18/12/2023 01:08

Boil the ham for about an hour in water with peppercorns, a cut up onion and 2 bay leaves.
Put it in a roasting tin and slash the fat into a diamond pattern. Poke a clove into each vertex. Then cover it in honey and mustard glaze (I thin this with pineapple juice) and roast it for an hour/hour and a half (this depends on size).
Eat it with mash or new potatoes, green beans/asparagus/sugar snaps, a fried egg and/or pineapple. Delicious!

BIWI · 18/12/2023 07:52

Lovely-sounding (and easy!) recipe here

I did the ham in Coke once and it was absolutely disgusting. So much so that we ended up throwing it all away Shock. I'll never even contemplate doing that again.

Honey-glazed ham recipe | BBC Good Food

Add a sticky honey and mustard glaze to gammon for a delicious sweetness that contrasts with the saltiness of the meat. It's great for a celebration supper

TheFallenMadonna · 18/12/2023 07:55

Cook in cider with celery, onion, carrots. Leave to cool in the cider. Remove skin. Smear with marmalade and english mustard powder. Roast in high oven until glaze is dark brown/ just starting to char (30 mins tops).

TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2023 08:01

Do the Nigella recipe in Coca Cola

I would often serve up ham with baked potatoes and cauliflower cheese on Christmas Eve. Or roast veg and parsley sauce.
