Does anyone know anything about teeth? (Bad pain)

Currently sat clutching my tooth in a lot of pain. Has come on suddenly. I can’t afford emergency treatment at private prices this close to Christmas so I’ve had to book an NHS one for next Friday. I’ve just taken a picture of the poorly tooth in question and it looks like half is missing? Or is it just a massive hole?

Im living a bit of denial that I might need to have it taken out.

Oof, that's a hefty chunk missing. You'll be exposing the root. I'd recommend getting some temporary filling until your appointment, give your teeth a good clean, rinse, drop some clove oil into the hole if you can, dab dry with tissue then pop a chunk of temp filling in.

Thank you. I’ve taken some naproxen and I’ve managed to order some numbing gel offline to come tomorrow! I’m guessing it looks like a root canal job then. It’s not constantly painful but when it throbs it really hurts!

Ouch. You may need antibiotics before having it removed. Root canal is around £3K I think.

Ohforfox · 17/12/2023 18:55

You can buy temp filling from Boots/Tesco etc. I wouldn't wait for the numbing gel to arrive you want to cover the hole ASAP.

No way. I had one recently at my very fancy private dentist and it was £1200.

Does it feel 'squidgy' when you bite on it? If so it's
Getting infected so get antibiotics asap - I can't tell you how horrible it is!
If it's just a broken tooth it would be good to get it sorted out as it will be uncomfortable good luck

flowerchild2000 · 17/12/2023 19:01

It does look broken, probably a nerve is exposed, hence the pain. It's become very common for people to break teeth since the pandemic, apparently it's caused by tension and mostly when we're asleep so totally unaware until the pain starts. It happened to me! I was given the choice to have it worked on but was also given the long term prognosis of having many follow up treatments to keep it. So I had it pulled. It's been a couple of years and it doesn't really affect anything, I only chew soft foods on that side but that's it.

Bollocks. I just paid a specialist endodontist to do a re-root canal in a front tooth for £700 (plus £90 to my regular dentist for the check up, assessment and referral!).

OP, that can't wait two weeks - try to get an emergency appointment with your NHS dentist tomorrow.

Clive oil on cotton wool stuffed into the hole. Then tomorrow get some temporary filling. Carry it on you, it falls out all the time. You will need a lot of work on that. I recently had a root canal with a specialist endo clinic and it cost £950 then £500 for the crown on top.

Plankingplanks · 17/12/2023 19:02

Clove

soontobeamama · 17/12/2023 19:10

It looks like you might have exposed the root/nerve - try using oil of cloves and strong pain killers. You can also buy a temporary filling kit which would help to seal the area before it can get looked at next week. Hope it goes ok

JustCosy · 17/12/2023 19:13

If you develop an infection (and you probably are) you will need antibiotics way before next week.
My sister is a dental nurse and she says nothing but bad things about root canals. She would tell you to have it out.

Calm down Cornish Porsche.🤣 I said “I think” this was based on a colleague coming in and saying she was told £3k.
