To order off the kids menu?

As a 35 yr old woman?
Long story short due to medical issues I can’t eat a full size meal so eating out I find it embarrassing leaving loads of food uneaten (example if I ordered a burger,
Id only manage half of it) and worry that the servers will think I didn’t enjoy it, so typically I avoid eating out.
Some places offer smaller plates which usually works out well, however not everywhere does.
AIBU to order from the kids menu as I don’t see the point in paying for an adult one when I can’t eat it?
DH has pointed out some places have an age limit which seems unfair because surely your paying proportionately for the smaller portion.

Also to add I have 4 teenagers who order from the adult menu so it’s not like we are buying one adult meal and 5 children’s meals but if it’s just me and DH would it be weird?

@CorvusPurpureus maybe restaurants should start doing adult portions of fish fingers and chips then 🤣

if you wish an adult portion. You ask.

Needmorelego · 17/12/2023 19:26

@Frasers I could I suppose 🤔
In McDonald's you can only get fish fingers with a happy meal (and only 3 fingers 🙁) - they don't sell them separately.
I have asked many times.

Tinyeater. I have the same problem due to having hiatus hernia , eating can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful . I have to have small portions and avoid greasy or spicy foods, coffee and fizzy drinks.

I usually just have soup and sweet or a starter and can opt for senior portions now I'm 65. !!

Needmorelego · 17/12/2023 19:28

@Frasers although what I meant really was that I often order off the kids menu because I prefer the food - not the actual portion size.
I have the diet of the average 6 year old.... seriously I do 😂

Hold me closer tiny eater! 😂

IIRC it's also acceptable to order two starters instead of a main. I sometimes do this when I don't want to eat much. Skip starter, choose two light starters instead of a main and then tea for dessert.

Post bariatric surgery when we go out OH and I choose a main we both like. I eat the portion I feel comfortable with and he has the rest. Sometime we order extra sides of there isn't enough veggies.

Yup, if there's the demand, they totally should.

But realistically, they are doing kids' meals in the quiet afternoon/tea time slot when they're accompanied by parents.

Pizza Express or similar lunch as part of a day out used to be one of my favourite things when dc were tiny & xh was driving - I'd get cheerfully, gently sloshed, eat an ok pizza & kids would be happy with 3 'courses' of dough balls, tomato pasta & ice cream.

The bill would cover 2 adult meals, a bottle of wine & the kids' meals.

If I'd theoretically parked up just the kids & their order? Their 'bill' wouldn't cover the use of the table, the waiting staff, the washing up etc.

Just leave what you can't eat
I've no idea why mm has this obsession with sparrow like eaters who have a teeny tiny bird like appetite and love to tell the world how they couldn't possibly eat SO MUCH FOOD

Haha there are loads of them but equally, small portions don't always equal small appetite! Medical issues aside...
I eat loads. Just not all in one sitting. Once you get used to it, it's quite hard to go back.

My good friend had stomach cancer and lost half her stomach. She ordered a starter as her main.

There's a difference between ordering a meal but getting full earlier than expected so leaving a few mouthfuls and ordering a meal when you already know that you will not be eating certain parts. I don't mind leaving food if I just can't finish it but if the starting portion size is more than double what I know I can physically eat then I do feel guilty ordering food that is literally going to be cooked for the sole purpose of ending up in the bin untouched - especially if it is not a one off occurrence.

I have had a gastric bypass, my stomach is 20% of the size it was before surgery. I cannot tolerate bread and pasta/rice I cannot manage more than 2/3 spoonfuls of. Sometimes though, when I go out I want a burger or a curry or a pasta dish but I also know that there are parts of the dish I physically cannot eat. Rather than have the chef waste their time preparing and cooking something I know will be remaining on the plate uneaten I will explicitly ask the waiting staff to make my portion smaller or just exclude the items I know I can't eat, that way the food isn't wasted.
