To expect my GP to do a bit more about my 3 month long period

I started bleeding 3 months ago. It has not stopped, not even for a day. It's a full blown period.

After 6 weeks I managed to get a GP appointment. They sent me for an ultrasound which showed some fibroids but not big enough to cause the bleeding. The GP receptionist told me this.

A few weeks later I called the GP again and managed to get a telephone appointment. My GP suggested I go on the mini pill and take Tranexamic acid for 5 days. Neither has stopped the bleeding.

I called again last week and he obviously thinks I'm a bit of a nuisance now. He suggested I have a coil fitted, but the surgery has a waiting list and I can't have it done until March...

This is genuinely making me SO miserable now. I cannot entertain even another week of bleeding. I think I am anaemic now as well.

My GP is so chill about it whilst it is literally making me incredibly unhappy with no end in sight.

Is there any female GPs at your surgery? You are not alone.

God that's awful. When I had a 2-week period my GP gave me 2 hormone tablets that stopped the bleeding. She said the scans etc can come later to diagnose any problems but the most pressing priorities to her were my blood-loss and mental well-being.

That seemed very sensible to me, I'd probably find a new GP if she had been as blasé as yours.

Gosh that sounds dreadful. I'd definitely be asking for a second opinion too. Does google offer up anything useful in the way of advice which you could print and take with you to an appointment?

Wow that's shocking but doesn't surprise me after this.
No female GPs at our surgery.

I'm also really worried now

That's SO true and should have been the priority!
Do you happen to know what tablets you were given?

Dr Google says those tablets that are used to delay a period.for holiday can be used to stop a period too. I'm really tempted to buy some as you can get them at Superdrug or Lloyd's pharmacy. I'd have to say I'm not T1 diabetic though!

I am in this situation too OP - four weeks period and still hasn't stopped, although it is very light, so I am not worried about anaemia etc. One week "normal" and then 3 weeks spotting.

Seems a (fairly) common thing when you are peri-menopausal but there isn't much in the way of advice.

It has happened to me before but stopped after about 3 weeks. And another time it morphed into another "proper" period and then stopped. This is the longest though.

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 17/12/2023 19:16

Ask for norethisterone if the tranexamic acid hasn't worked. I would insist on a second opinion and blood test to check iron levels. No harm in getting on waiting list for a coil but the priority at this point should be managing loss then looking at reasons why. Ask for gynaecology referral too!

TrousersAndPotato · 17/12/2023 19:23

Oh that's awful. I have a story that is a bit grim, so don't read it if you're a bit squeamish!

I had a period, well, flooding for 6 months. Given all the usual tablets and waffle. Was very anaemic, offered a hysterectomy! Eventually took myself to A&E after I passed a rugby ball sized clot.

Was again told to go home and take more meds.

I refused to move, very politely, until I'd been assessed by someone from gynae dept.

Four hours of to-ing and fro-ing, was Eventually sent for a scan where they found a pomegranate sized fibroid.

It was removed the next morning.

The reg who initially offered the hysterectomy came to see me afterwards and apologised!

I hope you get sorted soon. That was a thoroughly miserable (and very expensive) 6 months.

Just go to hospital OP. They're well used to shit GPs and they'll help you.

I'd push for an ultrasound. I had this during peri and left it because people convinced me it was normal but I had endometrial cancer. I was unlucky, it's still fairly rare so it's much more likely you don't have it and I don't want to alarm you, but when I finally went, my GP took it seriously and referred me for a scan.

Sadly no. I just logged into my patient portal but the digitisation only goes back 2 years at this clinic and this visit was at least 3 years ago.

My best recollection was that it was a stronger version of a birth control pill.

It's awful to say but in your shoes I'd be tempted to self-medicate with a week's worth of the contraceptive pill. Three months of bleeding is just medical neglect.

Morning all, rightly or wrongly I turned up at a walk in centre this morning and saw a lovely doctor (amazingly a man!) who was pretty shocked that I've been left bleeding with no end in sight. He's put me on Provera which he's happy to do even with my T1 diabetes. He's told me when he's next in after Christmas and said to turn up again to review it.

Very very pleased to hear this, appreciate the update. Here's to a peaceful Christmas in which your poor body has a chance to recover a little.

SkaneTos · 18/12/2023 23:05

Thank you for the update, OP! That sounds very hopeful.
I really hope you will feel better soon.
