DH has gone out tonight.
Started with me possibly dragging DD 3 out of bed to pick him up - 10 latest.
I got a message at 6.30 says FIL would drive him home or he would stay at friends.
I asked him to let me know as he hasn't got a key and I would want to lock up if he isn't coming home.
Iv heard nothing at all.
Why do men get to do this?

Is there a reason people don't have key safes? We have our spare key in one, attached by a coiled stretchy keyring thing - because our son kept using it, and leaving the key inside the house. Now it can't be taken away from the key safe.

I'd never leave a key under the doormat, or under a plant pot etc.

bellac11 · 17/12/2023 09:21

I know this is long gone now but I cant get my head round the key thing

You say you gave the walker your 'spare' key, so surely a spare key is a 3rd key, given that you have a key, OH has a key and your dog walker has the spare key??

So why hasnt he got the key. Or are you saying there are only 2 keys?

I know Im missing the point of the thread sorry

But to answer it slightly, when Im 'out out', my phone stays in my bag so my OH could be messaging me for all I know, I wouldnt see it.

I hope you got some sleep, I'm smiling at the weird MN obsession with how other people manage their keys that always comes up. People are allowed to do stuff differently to you 😀

MsRosley · 17/12/2023 09:25

Why do men get to do this?

Because their partners let them.

Funderthighs · 17/12/2023 09:26

We also have a key safe like @HurdyGurdy19 It solves this type of problem.

Of course.

But then people come a cropper like the OP has. All completely unnecessary.

A lot of people don’t know they’re a thing-we didn’t till we needed one for carers for a family member. The house we then moved to had one already, and if it hadn’t we’d have got one-they’re so handy

My post wasn't aimed at any one poster as there are several but having looked back at yours can you seriously not understand it? Surely you are exaggerating

Exaggerating what?

That OP uses the term 'spare key' which would imply there are 3 keys

Otherwise she would say that the dog walker is using OH's key and there is no spare key

Why would 2 adults who live in a jointly owned/rented house, not each have their own individual key?

Therefore any 'spare key' is a 3rd key surely?

I mean its Sunday, Im waiting to gather stuff to go down the dump so I have time to ponder this while I have another cuppa.

Just joining in to find out why the OP doesn't have three keys - one each and a spare.

Yeah, cos it's pretty obvious where the key to your house is for someone wanting to break in! Also, heard they invalidate your insurance!

@crumblingschools because we had to give it to the dog Walker for her to have access to the house for a one off walk today. Otherwise he would usually have key.

They'll make you a copy in Timpsons for about £5

Shiny88 · 18/12/2023 13:12

Haha who knew my key situation would bother people so much 😂.
We only have two keys as we only have 1 car.
And i always drive DH to work and pick him up.
There for he doesn't need to take the spare key with him 🤪. So the other key is our spare.
We don't live close to anything so always have to drive so who ever takes the car has the house key.
And it just so happened the 1 time we needed the spare the dog Walker had it 😂. Which we never use a dog Walker ever but did that day.
By no means do we gate keep on the house keys but we only need 2.

Clearly, you do need a spare key though.

You heard wrong about the insurance-it’s something I checked and double checked before we had dad’s installed…and funnily enough they’re very difficult to get into…and unless you’re really daft, you don’t advertise its presence

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 18/12/2023 15:13

This reminds me of the time my sister came home drunk and lost her key, she remembered we kept a spare one in a jar under the shed, probably not used for years. My parents woke up after hearing awful banging and cursing, she was halfway under a shed covered in mud. Or the time DH forgot his key so when he got home he stood outside the front door, phoned me and woke me up to tell me he had no key. The door was open, I knew he had no key and the idiot didn't even think to check.

We now have a 'secret' hiding place for our spare key now in case either of us loses it.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 18/12/2023 15:18

I mean, you've created this weird situation for yourself really with the very unusual premise of an adult not needing their own key as you accompany them most of the time.
