Best anti histamine for cat allergy.

Strange one, on AIBU for traffic.

I have a cat. Only had him a month or so and I love him so much! He’s like a therapy pet, I was given him the same day my DH was diagnosed with cancer and he’s been an absolute godsend.

Problem is, I seem to have a significant allergy. Runny nose, wheezy cough, sneezing.

I’ve bought myself a shark pet hair hoover, and stopped letting him sleep on my bed (which is sad as I liked having him there).

Any tried and tested anti allergy tips or meds?

I don't own a cat but sensitive to cat hair and other things. If I have to do anything that triggers the symptoms in me I just take a hayfever tablet. The generic cetirizine ones are cheap and the same as the expensive ones, and they work for me. You can buy them in the supermarket.

It gets much better as your immune system adapts. The first month or two I couldn't breathe at all, then it eased. Now I hardly notice her fur at all and she sleeps on my pillow. Occasionally have a 2-3 day flare up and OTC cetirizine does the trick. Get the cat back into bed!

Any antihistamine should be fine although I rate fexofenadine. Also flixonase if you are sneezing.
To be honest, you'll either become used to it & will only flare up occasionally, or you'll get worse & will have to re-home the cat. I got used to mine & it would have broken my heart to have got rid of him. Some people just can't have cats, though.

I also use fexofenadine. And some people use petal cleanse on the cat.

Yes to fexofenadine - we use Allevia

I find these good and work (I definitely notice if I miss a day so must be doing something!) - reasonably priced and same ingredient as expensive brands.

There is no such thing as a best antihistamine, there is none stronger than any other, just have to find what works best for you

FiveGoMadInDorset · 16/12/2023 22:38

DS takes Allevia which is fexofenedine
