To return to job that I wanted to leave

A work one.

I work for a large organisation that fairly regularly goes through changes.

I loved my previous role to a point but wanted to leave as I felt the lack of strategic direction and being moved fairly frequently was impacting both my chances of career progression and MH. HOWEVER my boss really understood my work life balance and we worked well together.

I recently moved to a new role in a related field but it is not supporting my work life balance and my new boss is very intense.

The new role isnt what I thought and is a lot more effort essentially impacting being a mum. For example organisation core hours are 10am - 2.45.

I usually do 9.30 to 4.40pm and then an hour in the evening doing my prep for the following day.

I do have two days a week using breakfast club but this is hit ans miss but when DC goes it is 8.30- 4.50 allowing earlier meetings.

Ive worked like this for years (prior to the pandemic) and it has never been a problem.

New boss insisits on meetings starting at 9.15 which is still my travel time after school drop off when on days where I dont have breakfast club. It is embarrassing me to keep reminding her of this.

I do use wrap around care two mornings a week and 4 evenings a week which does provide more flexibility but these are booked a term in advance and any changes cost the full amount of a session.

In addition I set up a meeting for 5pm for 30 mins and incurred the wrath of boss not working after 5pm for work life balance yet I am feeling like my work life balance is disappearing. Boss logs in at 7am which is my time with DC getting ready for school.

For full disclosure I am not a morning person either and in my many years of working in the organisation this has never been raised as a problem as I have always been in for when core hours start and by 9.30.

Am I being unreasonable to end the loan early and return to my previous role and put my desire to get promoted on the back burner until DC is older?

In terms of boss being intense - everything is needed now. And my work seems be changed by her a lot - I dont get proper feedback on this but usually an email with a passive aggressive smiley face - its really lazy management but possibly because she is busy, cant let go and is a perfectionist.

Am I being unreasonable to end the loan early on this point because I want proper feedback and coaching to develop and this is not being provided.

Thanks and apols it is soooo long

God should have checked before posting. To clarify:

I usually do 9.30 to 4.40pm and then an hour in the evening doing my prep for the following day, notes and actions from the day, filing or sending emails - so basically organising myself for the next day and planning etc

I do have two days a week using breakfast club but this is hit ans miss whether DC goes but when DC goes it is 8.30- 4.50 allowing earlier meetings. DC of course does go when I have meetings that start earlier and at times I have also booked ad hoc places if meetings have been scheduled for before core hours and I need to attend but these are becoming more frequently arranged for the days I do not have booked breakfast club places.

No promotion is worth a crap work/life balance and a manager who lacks empathy and an understanding of real life and the flexibility that is sometimes needed.

it wasn't a promotion but a sideways move to build skills and knowledge - so same money but a lot less flexibility

I would have an honest conversation with your boss and say it's not working and is there anything more they can do to make it work. If they say no, you have your answer...
