To leave my job..

I've been at my job since the summer. It's.. okay. It's not very well paid and the location is a bit of a nightmare.
The people and my boss is lovely though.

I've been offered a job doing the exact same work for over £1 more per hour, and it's the same amount of miles from home but doesn't take as long to get there, parking is much easier and they cover all yearly costs (around £200) for registration and CPD that my current employer gets us to pay for.

I've just come back from the Christmas party all expenses paid, and everyone was saying how well I'm doing, how glad they are to have me and my boss was saying to my husband how glad they are to finally have me as part of the team.

So if I do hand notice in soon.. mega guilt.
What do you think? Is it better the devil you know or is it too good opportunity to miss?

You go to the boss and say you've been offered it but really want to stay, can they match the pay.

Whaleandsnail6 · 16/12/2023 06:24

Do whats right for you.

Im in a similar situation, started a new job a few months ago, its really not for me. I have been offered a much better opportunity and so am handing my notice in on Monday.

I do feel very guilty that that have given me time and training, however I am miserable there and I know that realistically, even of my notice period is awkward, I'll be much happier elsewhere and they'll replace me and all will be fine.

alwaystired1988 · 16/12/2023 06:25

I'm 99% sure they wouldn't, I'm already on more than others who have been there longer and have extra qualifications. Also there no way they would cover the annual costs as he would have to do it for everyone x

What @Leafysuburb said but remember to factor in the additional costs. It’s not just £1 an hour it’s also the CPD and ease of commute so they’d need to offer more for me to stay.

Clarinet1 · 16/12/2023 06:26

Is there any scope for negotiation with your current employer using the other offer as leverage? Tell them you love the company and job but additional money and included registration etc are tempting. Has been known to work!

Clarinet1 · 16/12/2023 06:27

Ah - bit of a cross-post.

LadyWithLapdog · 16/12/2023 06:29

Do what’s best for you, even if it’s awkward. There’re lots of redundancies around atm, is the new job secure? What happened to the person you’re replacing etc.

alwaystired1988 · 16/12/2023 06:30

They are taking on because they are expanding. It's a job/career that people have been leaving in drones over the past few years so I think qualified people looking for work especially in my area are quite few and far between x

Posting for solidarity as I started my job in May this year and handed my notice in yesterday. I have worked there for years but moved to a different role this year. It’s awkward but you have to do what’s right for you.

ElGrump · 16/12/2023 06:48

Don't feel guilty. If you are in a shortage job then your current company need to get with the times. It's actually a complete piss take that you have to pay for CPD! I've never had to pay for that and I've worked for "poor" places.

Your boss will totally understand once you explain the benefits. Have the chat, tell him that financially you can't turn down the chance to apply. In a cost of living crises, nobody will question you.

He probably already knows the job is advertised.

Hiddenone123 · 16/12/2023 06:55

Hi, no they wouldn’t if no one tells the others. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know.
But if you want the new job then go for it. Good luck 🤞

PlipPlopChoo · 16/12/2023 07:08

It is not your fault that they do not pay well. We work to pay the bills so I think moving on is best.

I understand if they will be annoyed that you have only stayed half a year though.

Hibambinos · 16/12/2023 07:18

I would stay - a good boss is hard to find!

whatisforteamum · 16/12/2023 07:43

Only you know the culture there.
I swopped a job i loved and colleagues i loved for more sociable hours and a steady rota.
It has been one of the worst jobs ive had in decades.Back biting and gossip.
A group you can gel with is as important as the pay.

MuggleMe · 16/12/2023 08:32

I'd leave, of course they're glad to have you but this could be you for years to come. An awkward commute would be the clincher for me.

Singleandproud · 16/12/2023 08:36

Once you leave you'll be forgotten about in a few weeks. Don't let personal attachments keep you somewhere.

ilovesooty · 16/12/2023 08:37

Only you can know how valuable it is to you to be in an environment with lovely people versus better pay and travel.
