Do you think wearing wigs is weird?

My natural hair is quite short, about shoulder length. I wore clip in hair extensions for a while, then wore wigs for a little bit. I loved it, I haven’t had long hair since I was a lot younger, and while wearing wigs my hair got a lot healthier. Would you think it was weird if you noticed someone was wearing a wig, I wouldn’t try to pass it off as my natural hair if someone asked but I do get worried people will judge me. I know I shouldn’t care and I mostly don’t but part of me thinks what if people laugh about it! I’m 18, so maybe that changes things, which it shouldn’t but I just want people’s honest opinion.

I don’t think most people would even know. A lot more people wear wigs than people realise. I’m in a large lupus group and lots of people wear them due to lupus related hair loss and you’d seriously never realise.

I'm picking up a topper tomorrow 👏

@SylvieLaufeydottir sorry yes you're absolutely right. I know lots of black women wear them and I absolutely don't think that's in the least bit weird. In fact I think they look great (and normally you can't tell). I suppose I'm talking (as a white woman) about another white woman wearing a wig for non-medical reasons. Its really not common amongst white women unless for religious or medical reasons so from that POV I would consider it a bit strange.

I have a white female friend who wears wigs all the time for non-medical reasons. It's just fun, she has loads of different ones.

Ohmahgaws · 15/12/2023 20:28

no not odd.
my mate has several .. for different looks and moods. She also has a grey one . To practice for when she goes grey .

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/12/2023 20:30

I wouldn't think it was odd but didn't know which way to vote

35965a · 15/12/2023 20:32

If I had the money I’d buy loads of wigs and change my hair all the time (as a pp said, like Moira Rose)

Densol57 · 15/12/2023 20:36

Im about to transform from black box dyed hair to blonde, and I'll be wearing wigs when going out as I'll have a strange combination of 100% grey and weird orange hair until its fully stripped. Loads of people wear wigs as they are fabulous nowdays

Alarum · 15/12/2023 20:37

Not at all weird.

I don’t really get why someone would wear a terrible wig when you can get some really great ones. But the wearing of the wig in and of itself isn’t weird.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 15/12/2023 20:38

The only time my MIL complimented my hair, it was a wig 🙄 Soon after , a neighbour complimented me on my new do🙄

Bald as a coot. Chemo. That said I wore that thing way after my hair started growing back. It was so lovely. And clearly very realistic.

ANightingale · 15/12/2023 20:38

No, I'm increasingly considering getting one as my own hair is getting finer and finer with age.

MargaritaThyme · 15/12/2023 20:41

For men, yes. For women, no.

LlynTegid · 15/12/2023 20:45

Given some may do so because of medical treatment, no.

JacquiDaytona · 15/12/2023 20:46

I have absolutely no hair (alopecia) and wear wigs. I’ve been very open about it and people are very honest, and some do look shit - but a good one is expensive!

JamSandle · 15/12/2023 20:46

SylvieLaufeydottir · 15/12/2023 16:41

Tell me you're white without telling me you're white.

Wearing them is wayyyy more work than I could ever be arsed with, but I know perfectly well that many of the women around me are wearing wigs or hairpieces and I neither know nor care who. As PP note, WOC have been wearing them for yonks.

Did you need to be so rude?

EvilRingahBitch · 15/12/2023 20:46

Unusual if you're not Black or orthodox Jewish, but not a huge deal.

Amy Dowden has been wearing some nice ones on Strictly. If I hadn't seen her the previous week with a shaved head I would never have known. Must be way better for your hair than extensions. Presumably cheaper and easier too.

NotSorryForTheReality · 15/12/2023 20:51

Not sure if this matters but as a white person (Scottish so as white as white gets 😂)

I don’t think it’s strange at all most look fab and I’m OBSESSED with people who manage a fantastic hair line with them, not so much with the cheaper non hair line ones, though I don’t think it’s weird just obvious if that makes sense and I just think to myself that’s how I would look if I was to give a wig a go because I don’t have the hair skills required xx

Blinkityblonk · 15/12/2023 20:55

A lot of celebrities and Royal Family members wear hair pieces to bulk out their natural hair, have you never wondered why so many women in the public eye have lustrous long hair whatever their age?

My friend wears wigs as she has alopecia and they look amazing. I don't think I've noticed a wig on anyone in real life for a long time (apart from where I know to expect it such as Orthodox Jewish women) which shows they must be very natural, as lots wear them. If I had thin hair or none, I'd wear wigs or weave in hair pieces.

"When I was 18, a hundred years or so ago, men with toupees would get 'syrup' (of figs) in the street."

Is this meant to make sense? I can't make head or tail of this sentence. 😳

PonyPatter44 · 15/12/2023 21:12

I went to school in a part of North London where there were loads of orthodox Jewish families, so seeing women in wigs has always been quite normal for me.

Syrup of figs = wigs in cockney rhyming slang, so shouting syrup at men wearing wigs.

ConstantRain · 17/12/2023 22:20

@Sopla thanks for the explanation. Makes sense now Smile

elgreco · 17/12/2023 22:39

Why do orthodox Jewish women wear wigs?

Owlsandeagles · 19/12/2023 09:54

OP, I wear wigs as I have a form of alopecia.
No one would ever know unless I told them.
They're so so good now. Get one with a lace front and it will just blend into your skin.

Don’t worry what other people think. If it makes you feel happy and more confident go for it!
