I'm recovering from big surgery.

I asked him (DH) to pick up a few bits from the shop, I wrote a list, he still forgets three things.

I say to get any easy meal for tonight, anything whatsoever he fancies, just nothing spicy. He brings home a super spicy pizza.

I ask if he can pop to the pharmacy to get me some painkillers. He comes home with indigestion tablets.

He can't help it. He has Autism.

After 14 years I'm still learning. Be specific. Don't give too many instructions. It's like having a child in so many ways.

Can I please just sigh and roll my eyes here.

I'm sorry your ill op. It may be no help at all but if you have a coop nearby they may deliver same day- mine do at least, and in early baby days it was such a help to be able to order online at9am and it be there at 12. And you can click no substitutes so they WILL follow the list. Hope you recover soon.

How is asking for painkillers not specific enough?

Goldcrestonabranch · 15/12/2023 11:38

I have 2 DC with autism. I have no idea why your DH buys the wrong stuff but I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with ASD. Why does MN feel the need to attribute these sort of things always to Asd or so. some people just don't listen. Nothing to do with neurodiversity

Maybe the indigestion tablets said it helped relieve pain caused from acid reflux or something, and he just saw 'pain' and went with it. Being specific would have been 'ibuprofen'.

Why does Mumsnet feel that knowing someone with autism means that you know everyone with autism and how it presents? A non-specific shopping list can be very overwhelming to someone with autism, even if it doesn't apply specifically to the people you know

It's a bit like saying to kids 'don't run' and all they hear is run.

EdgarsTale · 15/12/2023 12:21

It sounds more like he bought what he wanted for dinner. I wouldn’t let him use Autism as an excuse.
