Who was in the wrong driving?near miss

Snowplacelikehome26 · 14/12/2023 22:33

Near miss today. There was a car approaching the mini roundabout from the right but he was a while off and wasn’t near the line yet so I entered the roundabout as I had time. However he sped up very very fast to intimidate me. He was so close going to the side of me. I do know it’s give way to the right but I thought as I’d already entered before him and I was already on the roundabout and he was not yet entering then I thought I would have had the right of way?

you do, he was an arse.

BIossomtoes · 14/12/2023 22:34

You had right of way. He’s an arsehole, a dangerous one.

TreacleMines · 14/12/2023 22:35

You had right of way.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/12/2023 22:44

You have to give way to cars on the right who are on the roundabout. Not cars on the right on an approach road who aren't yet on the roundabout.

There's a mini roundabout near us where everyone has got so fixated on the "give way to the right" that they all sit there waiting for the one in the next road to the right to make a move. Ridiculous!

WillowCraft · 14/12/2023 22:49

Hmm I don't know. I mean obviously he was an idiot for speeding up and threatening you. But I was taught that you shouldn't make someone brake if they have priority, so you need to give way to someone approaching the roundabout if they are going fast enough that you would cause them to brake by pulling out in front of them

WillowCraft · 14/12/2023 22:50

It sounds as though you misjudged his speed and should really have waited

Scarletttulips · 14/12/2023 22:55

We have a few like this - they assume if they speed up they have right of way - they really don’t.

TLDRfuckers · 14/12/2023 23:02

You give way to cars approaching on the right, defensive driving is safer than taking risks. Even if he’s an arse for speeding up I think your insurance company wouldn’t pay up if there’d been an accident.

cars do not need to already be on the roundabout for you to give way to those on the right, otherwise what’s the point of a mini roundabout (so tiny) at all?

Blanketpolicy · 14/12/2023 23:05

You might have misjudged his speed, he might have sped up.

Either way nothing happened so just move on.

TheUsualChaos · 14/12/2023 23:08

My guess is he expected you to wait and then sped up at the last second and then even if he only had to slightly tap his brake it gave him the instant rage because everyone on the road should make way for him 🙄

In fact similar happened to me this evening. Car to right was way back from the roundabout so I kept going. Huge gap. Suddenly he was practically in my boot and proceeded to tail gate me for about 2 miles. Just another aggressive twat on the roads.

Topofthemountain · 14/12/2023 23:12

OP you are asking on MN, it will always be your fault, whatever the circumstances. If you are as unfortunate as I am and drive a BMW or Audi, especially in black* you are doubly convicted of driving errors.

*I am included in this group of drivers.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 14/12/2023 23:14

Do you want to be right or alive?

Driving has got FAR FAR worse in the past few years. Theres a hell of a lot of drug driving now & people driving like selfish cunts.

you need to drive defensively & assume the fuck muppets will do something stupud.

Oh the "he who dares, wins" situation.

Obviously as the driver of a black Audi I am always the winner. 😈

I agree with this. You have to be able to anticipate what the other driver might do.

Regardless of whether she misjudged his speed he should have slowed down approaching a roundabout. There are some incredibly poor drivers on this thread.

So weird about car types. I only just passed my test late in life. I've noticed, without anyone telling me, that BMW and Audi drivers are the most aggressive. If I see an Audi approaching from behind now I always think 'oh shit'.

Tilllly · 14/12/2023 23:30

He's a knob OP

To be fair tho, you're just a woman, you should have given the important man priority

Moro93 · 14/12/2023 23:30

I don’t drive but a car recently did this to my DH. It was on his right, but about 4-5 meters away from actually reaching the roundabout. My DH easily had time to go without slowing him down. But he started beeping his horn, flashing his lights and sped up so he was right up our backs. Absolute dickhead, our kids were in the car as well.

YANBU, he wasn’t actually at the roundabout yet.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 14/12/2023 23:59

You give way to traffic on the right on a roundabout, if he was approaching then you should have waited.

Yes, no one should be speeding up as they approach a roundabout of any kind!

ItIsSleeping · 15/12/2023 00:18

It's difficult. You could have then put your foot down but them someone on your left may have seen the car on your right approaching and then assumed you would wait and so they could go but then you put your foot down to go. Definitely always err on the side of caution but I wouldn't say you were massively at fault at all.

Dammit. I spent my whole life driving Ford abc slagging Audi drivers.

Then my Smax died and now I drive a 10 year old Audi estate bought from my in laws.

Mh husband has an Audi as a contract car on lease via work.

We’ve accidentally become a double Audi household…

ThenAgain · 15/12/2023 00:29

You're in the right. Kind of driver that speeds up if you try to overtake.

Mudflaps · 15/12/2023 00:34

Get a good dashcam, I'm 35 years driving, no major incidents and a completely clean licence, drove for a living for about 10 years (delivering cars/vans/small trucks) and the quality of driving has deteriorated immensely in the last few years, the aggressiveness is shocking and its from young and older drivers. My dh has competed in motorsport since he was a teenager, for years at a high level, travelling Europe and beyond to do so but even he says that recently driving has lost its enjoyment because of the standards we are experienced on the roads, its not just drivers not knowing or following the rules, it's the attempted intimidation and angry behaviour that become a daily occurrence. We've invested in dashcams for all cars, front, rear and cabin cameras, I think everyone should do similar.

Well, it's often safer to do so, but if they're a way off, not in the roundabout, they don't have priority and should wait until it's clear to go. If you're on the roundabout and he's not, you have priority.

Even if he’s an arse for speeding up I think your insurance company wouldn’t pay up if there’d been an accident.

It wouldn't have been an accident; accidents are incidents which are difficult to expect, or reasonably predict. Accelerating into the side of another car because you feel it's your right of way is not accidental, it's reckless idiocy.

But yes, I agree that it's best to wait and avoid being hit by a top of the range bell end.
