To wonder why you have more pain after a trip to the dentist?

Light-hearted I guess but had an old amalgam filling replaced by a much more expensive porcelain filling. The dentist said it needed replacing before I start my Invisalign. After he'd done the filling he said it's a large filling but no nerve exposure but that it may need a crown eventually. Prior to the filling I had no pain or discomfort but there was decay showing apparently so had it swapped. It's been about a month since and it's sensitive to hot and cold and is only ok if I'm not eating or swishing liquid round that side. Aibu to think I shouldn't be feeling any discomfort? It's a private dentist and I'm due to revisit Saturday, would I be unreasonable to ask him to re do it for free if it isn't normal? And why did he not just crown it rather than fill it with a more expensive white filling? Anyone any experience of this.

You don't lose anything by asking.

this is totally normal for a while after a large filling has been replaced - the dentist will be able to explain it all, maybe draw a diagram or something. often replacing the filling again so soon will make the issue worse and Time is often needed. this is why they don’t place crowns straight away - they want to replace the filling and see if it settles before you shell out £££ for a crown. even if planning for a crown the filling needs replacing first if it’s leaking.

Thank you! It's all so costly isn't it so hoping the filling becomes less sensitive would rather avoid a crown as that's even more money 🤣

I had an old filling that had fallen out in Covid replaced recently. The tooth was fine and had no decay or anything. It really hurt afterwards and I went back. The X-ray showed a mild inflammation probably caused by the injection site but the nerves of the tooth were fine. It settled down in a few days.
