Husband using AI to generate women

AnnoyedByAI · 14/12/2023 14:27

Hi there (my first AIBU), I wonder about your comments about my thought.

Basically my husband has this new hobby of generating images of attractive women he can use for the narration of his youtube channel (that has barely few tens of view each video, so a total fiasco). The images are not obscene (not even really sexualised), but they invariably gorgeous women. DH says that's to try to get more views and they are just "normal" images.
Ok it's not "cheating", but isn't that inappropriate?
Especially when he does this in plain sight, generating lots of images and, to piss me off, even asking me which image looks better.

To add more context, his whole enthusiasm about all this AI stuff irritates me, especially when he keeps joking that we'll both be out of job because of AI (wtf is funny about it?), and now he's even encouraging our DS (7) to ask questions to the robot (which gives completely rubbish answers) and our DD (4) seems getting curious as well.

Should I ask to ban this AI thing in our house?

DH says the website actually refuses to create ugly women as they are considered offensive...

Hes not far off tbf. AI is programmed to be "nice" - chat gpt is very "ethical" and #bekind in its answers for example.

But with the right prompt I could easily generate a cartoon witch for a Halloween promo, wart on nose, straggly hair etc.

But if you just prompt "woman in a red dress" they will inevitably be nice looking.

skyfalldown · 14/12/2023 17:29

Not cheating but very sad and a big ick (the youtube channel alone would do it for me I have to say)

AI art is also pretty unethical because it steals from artists without their consent by scraping their data and using it to train up their models but that's by the by

ManateeFair · 14/12/2023 17:22

So is he just creating a still image of a blandly pretty woman for the video thumbnail, to encourage more clicks?

I mean, it's bit tragic but it's hardly crime of the century.

The image is still but the mouth of the woman actually moves as she reads the script (and voice itself is fake)

Would you be happier if he was generating images of ugly women?

I presume she would be happier if her manchild of a "D"H wasn't objectifyjng women. Anything wrong with AI men, or elves for that matter?

GrumpyPanda · 14/12/2023 17:45

Apparently having a "woman" in the video thing makes the channel more appealing. If instead of a woman there was a man, probably there would have been only 10 views per video instead of 20...

That's exactly the logic used to have barely clad models draped across cars, machinery or whatever in conventional advertising. Your instincts are right OP- it's disgusting. And I stand by my previous suggestion. Why not consider a cute green alien?

First generation ones did this, it is true.

Adobe and Shutterstock have solved the problem though, those are just the two I know of.

And YANBU, he's doing what car makers and millions of other advertisers used to do. Drape a beautiful woman in a tight top across your product. Old fashioned sexism. The fact it works doesn't mean we should continue to do it.

Sorry i think there’s an NC fail ? What are the women doing? cycling?

No I'm not the OP 😂

It's because cycling is an "outing" hobby on MN

a222 · 14/12/2023 17:51

LOL this is both hilarious but quite depressing too. get rid of this loser, like it’s actually embarrassing i’m not sure how i’d carry on seeing someone like that 😂

Cailleachian · 14/12/2023 18:03

Have you thought about chatting through your issues with ChatGPT?

Rather than bitching about AI, much better to have an open and honest dialogue laying your feelings out, making yourself vulnerable and talking about how it makes you feel and less chance of the robots having you on a hitlist when they take over the world.

He's a man child.
Sometimes he is, ofter in a funny way, sometimes he's a bit immature tbh.

Would you be happier if he was generating images of ugly women?
maybe 😆
DH says the website actually refuses to create ugly women as they are considered offensive...

why haven’t you said what his channel is about?
I don't want to promote it actually. Anyway it's about financial trading. Apparently having a "woman" in the video thing makes the channel more appealing. If instead of a woman there was a man, probably there would have been only 10 views per video instead of 20...

Ok, I am getting worked up for nothing.

One step for man, one sizeable leap backwards for womankind!

Goldenbear · 14/12/2023 18:09

One small step, not 'one step'🙄

LinguisticallyCunning · 14/12/2023 18:18

The genie is out of its lamp now and won't be stuffed back in so we might as well try to find ways of working and living with it.

Would you be as annoyed if he was drawing the pictures himself?

OneMorePlant · 14/12/2023 18:26

That's really creepy behaviour.

Also letting your children ask AI questions is just utterly stupid. People seem to be under the wrongful impression that AI is smart. It's not. At all.

It uses the data that people have fed it and tries to make an answer out of that. If it does not know something it will just make shit up because AI does not understand the importance of truth and factual information. It does not understand context. It does not understand social norms and ideological discussions. It's dumb.

I do AI art occasionally (mostly animals but also 1950s pin ups, fully clothed, just a wee bit pouty). There are many online AI art communities with big prize competitions. I won one recently. l was well chuffed and it gave me some great advertisement for my art.

Edited

You are chuffed because you fed a prompt or pictures into an AI and it made a picture based on learned algorithms based on stolen art work from actual artists that did not gave their permission for their art to be fed into a machine?

FFS.

Chimbospinach · 14/12/2023 18:33

I think you’re getting stressed over nothing, it’s not inappropriate images and it sounds like he will probably give up on the channel soon anyway if it’s not taking off?
ive been won round to ai lately, I hated it when it came out but started using it for creating images while editing tooand it does make life a lot faster.

Don't lots of families have an Alexa? I wouldn't have one myself but there's a proliferation of smart tech and asking AI questions in the home already!

This is a very disappointing thread. I thought it would be a kind of weird science situation.

🤣🤣🤣 me too.

Sunflower8848 · 14/12/2023 18:42

You are jealous of AI women? I’m confused.

Alexa is originally a command and control system, meaning they are preprogrammed with questions like "what time is it?". It has evolved a bit but that is the basis of it.

Ai is language based models meaning they read tons of written language as data and try to make their own sentences and answers with what they have learned.

For example so if an AI has read tons of religious texts it will answer you according to what it's read so I might tell you it's really bad for you to eat bacon. The reason won't be because of health but because pigs are unclean animals in religious texts but it will not tell you that. Just that bacon is bad.

Tell him from a competent and successful Youtuber and marketer that people want to feel a genuine human connection when they watch videos and his channel is getting so few views because people don't want to watch a photo's mouth move while a computer reads out some words. As soon as people hear that fake voice and realise nothing else is happening in the video, they go elsewhere. His watch time must be through the floor.

He'd get more traction being himself and reading in his natural voice.

Tell him to Google Uncanny Valley, it's very relevant to CGI/AI imagery. And to Google Youtube SEO.

Sounds sad all round tbh.

welcometothnuthouse · 14/12/2023 18:53

mono wtf?😀

WickerMam · 14/12/2023 18:58

Surely your problem is that you have a DH who wants to be a youtuber when he grows up. Nothing to do with AI.

CipherEcho · 14/12/2023 19:36

Does he use midjourney ? @AnnoyedByAI
