Nursery gave baby rusks

Wonderingabt · 13/12/2023 21:44

7 month old recently at nursery.

They've fed her rusks. Should I be worried?

I don't offer rusks at home because I heard they are full of sugar. I was fed them myself as a baby though as were others in 80s.

A nursery worker today commented that 'she loves rusks'. Do I need to step in and say no rusks? I hate the idea of kicking up a fuss but I don't want her eating rusks every day. Once a week I can cope with.

The rest of the nursey food seems healthy but I'm surprised they give rusks as I assumed they know about sugar etc. Unless these are special rusks...do those exist?

Yabu - no need to kick up fuss
Yanbu - tell them no

It’s rusk, not crack cocaine 😂 she’ll live.
Just take a low sugar alternative in and ask that they give that instead in future. No big deal.

dementedpixie · 13/12/2023 21:46

I'd tell them not to give them and to offer an alternative. May as well have given a chocolate digestive tbh

TeaKitten · 13/12/2023 21:47

Tell them no if you aren’t happy with it, I wouldn’t be happy with it either, it’s lazy. But also there is nothing to worry about, they aren’t the healthiest food but they aren’t going to harm your baby. Ask for the menu and state no rusks. She’s your baby and you pay them to look after and feed her so don’t be afraid to say what you want and don’t want (within reason of course).

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 13/12/2023 21:47

I thought they were low sugar now days

dementedpixie · 13/12/2023 21:48

The low sugar Farleys ones are still 20% sugar

If this is the case then I'm fine with it. Surely they wouldn't buy sugary food for the baby room??

It's just not a big deal. Even if it had been - shock horror - a chocolate digestive 😯 it wouldn't be a big deal.

If you don't want them to feed her rusks, just say so. It's not a problem.

Em2ds1dd · 13/12/2023 21:50

how about just talking to the nursery and getting more information on the type of rusk, including sugar content, then make an informed decision on any next steps.

There’s still no real nutritional value to them, it fills babies with nothing useful when they could be having fruit/veg/generally proper food groups.

Theunamedcat · 13/12/2023 21:50

Are they proper rusks?

dementedpixie · 13/12/2023 21:50

The Organix little ruskits are 13% sugar

dementedpixie · 13/12/2023 21:51

Did they give as a finger food or mashed up?
I'm sure there must be better alternative for either of them

Daisybuttercup12345 · 13/12/2023 21:51

PFB? She will survive 😆 🤣

YourNameGoesHere · 13/12/2023 21:52

I wouldn't be impressed at that. They seem such a lazy choice given all the other options she could be having. Are the rusks on the menu if not I would be very wary of how accurate the rest of the menu was.

dementedpixie · 13/12/2023 21:52

I didnt use rusks for either of my kids after tasting how sugary they were myself. They survived without them

Wonderingabt · 13/12/2023 21:53

Would it be bad to include an alternative in her bag and a note saying give her this instead of rusks?

I generally like the nursery so far and don't want to be difficult but alarm bells rang when I heard about rusks.

Mum2jenny · 13/12/2023 21:53

No, I wouldn’t want my little one to be fed rusks just because it’s easier for the staff

Wonderingabt · 13/12/2023 21:54

What alternatives to rusks could I put in her bag?

Yeah it would, she can’t talk so you need to use your words! Don’t leave a note, talk to them. If food is included they will have fruit and veg. Leaving a random snack and a note is odd.

lifehappens12 · 13/12/2023 21:55

Before adding anything to the bag you need to speak to the nursery. At my children's nursery due to allergies it was strictly forbidden to bring any food in.

GrazingSheep · 13/12/2023 21:57

Are you not told what the menu is for a seven month old?

Wonderingabt · 13/12/2023 21:58

We got the typical menu plan when we signed up and they usually tell us at handover what she's had. Hence why rusks came up

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 13/12/2023 22:00

Jesus Christ, they're just rusks. Babies love them. Calm down.

StarBrightly · 13/12/2023 22:01

I wouldn’t be happy and would say no. It’s a sugary biscuit broken down with milk to mush who would feed that to a baby ?
I don’t mind porridge, but honestly rusks!

Most boxed cereal is rubbish, and rusks are definitely rubbish as far as I’m concerned
