What age did your child start making their own packed lunch?

DH wants DS8 to start making his own.

I wanted to see what the norm was as I think he is a bit young. Aibu?

DTs started taking an interest around y5, if he wants to do it I'd encourage it. Although mine gave me more mess to deal with in the beginning!

Hangingintherejust · 13/12/2023 18:03

Ours started about that age, with supervision to make sure it was balanced but only once or twice a week.

Mine had school dinners, but would certainly make their own packed lunch for trips outs at that age.
If he hasn't been so far, then why not encourage him to make it, whilst you are still around in the kitchen and able to offer support or advice as needed ?

Mine started making their own lunches as a lockdown activity, age 7&8.

My mum made mine until I left secondary at age 18 Blush

My 8 year old makes his own. My MiL made my DH's until he was 23, which was when he left home....

Girasoli · 13/12/2023 19:29

DH always makes DS1s (7) but DS likes to make himself a 'snack plate' when he gets home from school.

freyf · 13/12/2023 19:31

Thank you. Before I went at DH for being too harsh I am glad I checked here. I will start him watching me and helping me make then he can start to do it. Thanks all

My almost 5 yr old makes his own with supervision (sandwiches, cuts fruit, veg etc with a kid friendly knife). I involved him in cooking and baking since he was 2

rainbowunicorn · 13/12/2023 19:41

It's pretty basic in terms of what is involved, no reason for him not to be doing it.

Leeds2 · 13/12/2023 19:49

I think it would be a good skill for him to learn at this age, if interested. Perhaps learning why he should be including fruit and/or veg, why he shouldn't just have a bar of chocolate and a cake etc, as well as how to butter bread and make a sandwich. If he really can't be bothered, I would continue to make it myself!
