I have hired a renovation company for some work on my house. I was quoted 2 weeks but we are currently in the third. The guy that is here doing the work isn’t who I hired, the company send people and oversee it. I am happy with the job and the work though. I am paying a lot and it’s not on the cheap side.

i don’t have the number of the man in my house.

last night when the decorator went home, I went to have a bath and noticed paint on the bathroom floor (a room not being done) along with paint on my toilet seat. Previously they’ve left plaster down the toilet / bath to obviously dispose of it. There’s some ingrained paint in my real wood flooring of one room and some paint in my kitchen again from them cleaning brushes. I text the main person who I have contact with and pay to ask that this be cleaned at the end of the job because I’m worried about staining.

This morning, the decorator came and immediately confronted me, saying how disappointed he was. I explained that I couldn’t ask him and simply had said that I was concerned by the end of the job as I’m worried about staining. I feel like a little girl who’s been told off and I’m a bit upset by the confrontation.

I would have told him to his face but I’ve mentioned things before when there’s been paint on the floor and I was frustrated by it last night and I couldn’t contact him directly. I don’t always get a chance to speak to them in the morning as I go into a room with my dog to keep out the way and begin working.

Any advice? I have apologised

It's not great that the paint was smeared on the floor etc but could you really not set aside 5 minutes in the morning to show him and ask that he clears it up and not make a mess in the house?

billyt · 13/12/2023 08:25

No, you're not at all unreasonable.

I'd have been blazing at plaster down the toilet, let alone paint.

They are supposed to be experts at their work and not poor with their care and cleaning.

Don't let them think you're a walkover when you'r win the right.

EvilElsa · 13/12/2023 08:25

I'd be very concerned about them putting plaster down the toilet!!!
I wouldn't have apologised. I'd be furious.

if I’m honest I was frustrated and I was hoping the overseer would remind him to clean up the paint. I didn’t think it was a big deal to message and it was a nice message.

I was told there’s no issue with this but I’m convinced that’s not true as you shouldn’t flush anything but loo roll down!

Some builders do chuck in down the loo and it very often adheres to the pan causing staining and often the need for it to be chiseled off (worked in the building industry for years and wouldn't allow this disposal method). It also can cause drain blockages whatever they tell you.

I would also have waited and told him face to face. Presumably it was out of work hours when you messaged the main guy anyway? I wouldn't have bothered someone outside working hours unless it was an emergency.

Can I ask if you're a woman who lives alone? I wonder if he would have told a man off for doing the same thing though.

It's not necessarily a big deal to message from your perspective, but I guess to him, it may feel like a big deal because you've complained to his employer. Personally, I like to address issues with the people face to face, and if there is still no resolution, go to the employer. You're not wrong to be frustrated by his lack of care, though, and he needed to be told.

What have you apologised for?

What was he disappointed in?

I don't quite understand but paint ingrained into your floor is not on and should quite rightly be complained about. It should have been cleaned up immediately before it dried.

I apologised for texting the person who I have the contract with. He is disappointed I didn’t wait to tell him to his face.

After today’s work I am more frustrated though, more mess in the wood, and I’m not happy with the neatness of the paintwork. It’s a first coat but it’s a dark colour (Downpipe) against a white wall, so the lines need to be perfect and they’re not 😭

Omg, I would have gone nuclear if he'd tried to tell me off for his shoddy work practice. I bet he's pissed because the company who have subbed him in have given him a bollocking. You deal with the person you're paying, and I hope you were on the phone to them immediately to complain about his behaviour.

And only an idiot thinks that chucking plaster down a loo is a good way to dispose of it.

platinumplus · 13/12/2023 21:33

If you have a contract with someone, you deal with them. Don't let him "tell you off" in your own home especially when his work sounds pretty abysmal.
