I'm in my early 30s and have very dark brown hair, I've been getting grey hair since I was 21. It must be noticeable now because a few people have commented on it, I do dye it but I'm not bothered if I still have the odd one or two, however I'm not yet ready to fully embrace it.

I went for a blow dry this evening and without me saying anything the hairdresser said 'You're too young for all this grey hair!"
I told her my age and explained I'd been going grey for over a decade, and she just replied that I had a babyface.

A few months ago an ex colleague said loudly in front of others: "Have you got grey hair?!"

It's just hair for goodness sake. Why don't people realise that it can happen younger, you don't have to be 97 years old to get grey hair, and that there's nothing wrong with it. I know that's hypocritical of me to say because I dye it, but I'd never dream of pointing it out in others.

It's not even the first time a hairdresser has mentioned it. If I've gone in their for a cut and not having any colour treatment or asked for an opinion of the colour, then it's absolutely none of their business tbh whether I'm grey or not.

It's clearly a touchy subject for you. Why is that? I had brunette hair till my late 30s then they grey was taking over so I went blonde. Now I'm natural white. Work out what you want and go for it, it's a fruit less expensive task to keep dyeing it.

Milknosugarta · 12/12/2023 20:59

I agree with you, it's completely natural. But it's made out to be "a problem" or otherwise undesirable in order to monetise it.
The hairdresser of course wants to sell you a service. The beauty industry wants you to buy products.

It's not that it's touchy as such, I just don't get why people feel the need to point it out whilst clearly implying they see it as a bad thing.. I don't know if it would suit me tbh and I like my dark hair, but maybe in the future.

I guess it could be them trying to just sell me a colour service. Years ago in Paris I went for a haircut and the stylist straight out told me my eyebrows were 'awful'. I didn't ask her anything about them!

I wouldn't worry about it. Ive heard hairdressers come out with all sorts of crap but i mean they have to make small talk all day so 🤷

OchonAgusOchonOh · 12/12/2023 21:04

Yeah. I got told by a hairdresser once that my hair was beige. I didn't go back.

Milknosugarta · 12/12/2023 21:19

It's not personal from them, they are just trying to make money. Like every week on TV there's an ad for a better mascara/face cream/shampoo, because we've all got stubby lashes/wrinkles/problem hair, and they can cure us if we just give them more (and more) money. It's stupid.

I would expect it from a hairdresser tbh. Your hair is their business.
