To really hate this phrase

And I am being unreasonable

Mucky pup.

It makes me cringe whenever it is used to 3 year old DS. I have no idea why, I am sure its unreasonable, but does anyone else have a strong reaction to a harmless phrase?

OP posts:

'Dance like no one is watching.'

Please don't.

In any case no one is watching, they’re looking at their phones.

savemytimezone · 13/12/2023 11:18

"Making memories"

Stupid!

You can't MAKE someone have the memories of your choosing anyway. As BIL discovered when he was asking his (now adult) son about something they did together when he was 6. It was obviously a lot more important to BIL than it was to his son, as he couldn't remember a thing about it and looked pretty bored at its retelling 😂

My siblings and I have quite a lot of different memories about our childhoods.

Also DH and I remember things differently - things that have happened recently!

Least favourite word in the English language is posh. I feel like when people use it to describe someone, it's a backhanded compliment.

If you just mean not utterly chavvy, and maybe ordinary middle class, speaks RP, etc, then I take that as a compliment even if it is meant spitefully. But we all know affected Hyacinth Bucket types as well, I daresay

For f---s sake
What the f---k
What's sexual intercourse got to do with it?

Totally agree with this! I had the addition of f*#k to sentences. "That was f'ing brilliant" What's wrong with it just being brilliant?! Makes my skin crawl.

HoHoHoliday · 13/12/2023 11:31

"Making memories" as some have already said. Usually seen on social media with multiple photos of kids, when probably the only memories the kids have is of being made to pose for photos for ages instead of enjoying themselves.

"And just like that..." I cannot stand this phrase and feel rage whenever I see it. E.g. "And just like that I have a four year old". Just like what? It didn't happen instantly did it, it took several years.

I quite like "mucky pup" from the OP, I use it a lot to my dog after a muddy walk, often alongside "soggy doggy"!

cocunut · 13/12/2023 11:31

Something about "fell pregnant" really grinds my gears. Like, oops, oh no, just tripped and fell pregnant! Totally irrational and I have no idea why it annoys me so much 😂

watchingsmurfs · 13/12/2023 11:37

“Off of” a place. For example, Scott Mills off of Radio 4, who said it constantly when I was forced to listen to his show.

eandz13 · 13/12/2023 11:47

"Laughed way harder than I should have"

....how hard should you have laughed? What is the measurement system here?

Also can't stand being asked if I slept well. I have no idea why.

To quote the great deadpan American comedian Stephen Wright, the correct answer to “Did you sleep well?” is “no, I made a few mistakes”.

There was a recent thread where the OP asked her mother, who was visiting, if she’d slept well & was outraged that the answer was an honest ‘No, because…’

I can’t remember what exactly disturbed the mother, I think it was OP’s DH being noisy. But the OP thought she should have said yes, whether it was true or not, and just wouldn’t see that she shouldn’t have asked the question in the first place if she wasn’t prepared for the truth.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 13/12/2023 12:36

Also ‘cute / sweet’. Bearable if it’s about babies / baby animals. Otherwise here seems to be a very fine line between cute / sweet and twee. I cringe on the baby name threads when someone says a name is sweet.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 13/12/2023 12:56

I loathe the phrase "I'd rather stick rusty nails (or similar) in my eyes than.... " do something not particularly onerous just that the individual doesn't want to do it.
Agree with the the other posters who have mentioned the words posh, bad boys, space and pointless use of the word fuck.
Also journey as in "your shopping journey through Sainsburys"

irritation2345678 · 13/12/2023 12:58

I hate 'reaching out' or 'just reach out'

Makes me think of the expression'reach around' 😳

CurlewKate · 13/12/2023 13:02

@CustardySergeant "WTF? That is beyond sick! What a repulsive woman she is. 😡Surely you've reacted when she's said this?"

Loads of people say this. I hate it. HATE it. But I don't think they mean actually sexy.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 13/12/2023 13:32

Ha @HoHoHoliday - whenever the cat comes in from the rain in our house he’s hailed as the “Soggy Moggy”!

I can’t stand “we’re pregnant” or “they’re pregnant”. No. Two people may be having a baby, but only one person is pregnant. Grr.

“You Mucky pup” is so much less offensive than the “You Filthy Arab” that was used for the same purpose in my childhood, though… at least there are no racist undertones in “Mucky pup”…

Jesus, that took a turn

Not overly keen on food related threads

Apart from the god awful yum/yummy/nom I hate the verbs used like bung, Chuck, throw, lob, etc. Jamie Oliver has a lot to answer for

Also when someone describes food and a poster says

"Ooh I'm hungry now". You maybe fancy something but that doesn't make you hungry

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 13/12/2023 13:57

A couple I know calll each other bubs.
Makes me a little sick in my mouth

One of my relatives and their partner call each other "babe" all the time. They're also big on PDAs as well. It's quite uncomfortable.

Maxus · 13/12/2023 14:21

I will learn you.

No it's I will teach you.

MeanMedian · 13/12/2023 14:54

People describing their partner as ‘amazing.’

I really doubt they are. Unless they’re a circus performer.

It’s amazing how many things are ‘amazing’ nowadays.

' nip it in the bud' makes me cringe so hard I might just scream

I've got one worse for you. In the States people often say "Nip it in the butt". I have to bite my tongue when I hear that. Also I hate it when I hear people ordering food say to the server " I'll do a x" instead of " I'll have a x" or " May I have a x".

Mumguilt19 · 13/12/2023 18:48

Oh I have so many:

Picky bits/tea
Makes my skin crawl
Nom nom
Doggo/doggy
Furbabies

however as irrational as it may be, the biggest offender for me is Gifting...I hate this so much!!
