My parents say ON-velope. Rather than EN-velope. Cin-a-MAR, rather than Cin-a-ma.

Slightly differently, they also say 'trod on' rather than 'stepped on'. I know it's not incorrect, I just hate the posh way they say trod and think it's a horrible word!

All the above drives me crazy! Aaaaarrrghhhh

Inspired by the theatre thread!

I dont get the Mac Donald's one. How is that wrong? How should it be pronounced?

It's usually pronounced mac-DON-alds, with the emphasis on the second syllable, rather than MAC-donalds, with stress on the first syllable.

Dotcheck · 12/12/2023 21:53

Nasty thread, but hey, it’s about old people, so who gives a shit?

Don't worry, I'm very old and I love MN bile, better than most TV comedy!

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:22

@Mull Have not RTFT but Brufen was a brand name for Ibuprofen, yes, and I still catch myself using it out of habit.

They were clutching at straws there 🤣

Not at all! It was a genuine question, to which the answer happened to be No.

As it happens, the person in question isn't Welsh at all; but if she had been, it would have made complete sense! 'Tuth' for tooth is also common in large parts of Wales.

FlamingBlue · 12/12/2023 22:23

What heinous crimes your parents commit and thank goodness you all turned out to be so perfect, hmm.

Unless I'm misunderstanding...'cwoissont' is the correct pronunciation for croissant. How do you say it?

The t at the end is silent

French innit

I assume cinemar is the southern pronounciation, like lartay for latte.

There were several Helens in my class at primary school and one of the mums used to call them Hel-LIN.

Hel-lin is RP ish I think, that’s how I’d say it

Notmetoo · 12/12/2023 22:25

StuntNun · 12/12/2023 20:38

I pronounce all those words the same way @Notsurehwhattdo it must be a regional accent.Grin My mum always says veHicle pronouncing the H which I find a bit strange.

So do I!
I also say MAC donalds and Cheerios with the emphasis on the os.

ellecf21 · 12/12/2023 22:26

My Dad says "tuth" for tooth and my mum calls Airbnb "Air nub" 🤣 I enjoy their mispronunciations.

Runnerduck34 · 12/12/2023 22:27

My mum pronounces grandsons name Knorr ( as in cupasoup) rather than Noah.
It was how she grew up pronouncing it and she now can't get her head round the usual pronunciation.
Drives my sister mad!
Mum doesn't do it deliberately -she has dementia so just can't relearn the pronunciation she used growing up.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 12/12/2023 22:18

Before UCAS there was UCCA, pronounced Ukka, rhyming with pukka so maybe that's where it comes from.

Wasn't it originally two bodies - UCCA (pronounced to rhyme with pukka) and PCAS (pronounced PEE-cass) - that became UCAS? On that basis, saying 'UCK-ass' makes perfect sense.

Yes, that's exactly how UCAS came about.

I think I say falafel like that! How do you say it?

Like 3 separate words. She says Fal (as in pal). A. (A as in phonetically) Fel. (As in I "fell" down. Fal. A. Fell.

I've always pronounced it fal..afel...all one flowy word?

West Yorkshire.

Bratford is correct if you're from Yorkshire!

HubbabubbaT · 12/12/2023 22:30

I'm have vitiligo (vit-il-EYE-go) ... mother insists on calling it vil-LIT-iggo and won't be corrected!

Useruser1212 · 12/12/2023 22:33

My mum says 'sq-ehzz-ed' instead of squeezed. She also says 'wow-ful' instead of woeful. And 'jen-re' instead of genre. And finally, she says 'mod-ren' instead of modern. I get mini rage inside me when she prounces those words incorrectly. I've no idea how she came be believe that's how they're pronounced!?

Tbh I don't think that bubble juice is any worse than (or different to) fizzy pop!

KnittingKnewbie · 12/12/2023 22:38

These are hilarious
I especially like the jazzy Nazzys!

My DM calls the cereal MOOS - li. Like a cow
I say MEWS - li. Like a cat

Yes,everyone I know says 'tuth'.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2023 22:39

My dad pronounces Muesli as Moosly. It makes my teeth itch!

NomDePrune · 12/12/2023 22:39

DappledThings · 12/12/2023 21:14

Another pronunciation thread with unhelpful, nonrhotic-centric use of "r".

Some people say cinemah, it isn't cinemar.

My grandad apparently insisted on 'kinema' as it is Greek not Latin in origin - annoyed my dad when he was a boy, in the forties!

JustineBeaver · 12/12/2023 22:39

Kelly Minogue… growing up, my dad refused to believe there was such a name as Kylie.

Also both my parents pronounce absolutely as abso-YOOTLY.
No idea who started saying it first/who then copied who, but it makes me want to rip my ears off!

Storynanny1 · 12/12/2023 22:41

“ tuth” is how my Wiltshire parents pronounced tooth.
My late mother always called moccasins “ mow-cas ins” and Tenerife “ Tenerifee “

Coffeeandcrocs · 12/12/2023 22:42

My DF pronounces it Cov-id, makes my skin crawl.
