My parents say ON-velope. Rather than EN-velope. Cin-a-MAR, rather than Cin-a-ma.

Slightly differently, they also say 'trod on' rather than 'stepped on'. I know it's not incorrect, I just hate the posh way they say trod and think it's a horrible word!

All the above drives me crazy! Aaaaarrrghhhh

Inspired by the theatre thread!

So sorry theses good people who fed and clothes you all for decades are so stupid and embarrassing. Hope your kids publicly shame you in 20 years too.

That’s the whole point; it isn’t public. It’s anonymous. And it’s the only place you can say things about the stuff you’re parents do which make you cringe but aren’t actually real complaints.

DollyDaydreamW · 12/12/2023 21:49

Chimbley.
Sambwidge (instead of sandwich)
Also says serviette instead of napkin, I hate that word so much.

Pronounces "bolero" as bowler-oh.
Welch insteaf of Welsh.
Caffy instead of café.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 12/12/2023 21:49

Tonight my DH said let's watch 'Verjul' on TV. What the heck is Verjul? He meant Vigil. Well how else do you say it he asked me! Haha he's an otherwise intelligent man.

JaneIves · 12/12/2023 21:50

My mum is the queen of mispronunciation, of which I think she plays on it a fair bit.
She started saying quite 'cutesy' and babyish things when my brother was small, he's now in his forties (and cognitively impaired) and she still does it! Also to my 10 year old. Drives me up the wall -
Santi claws, easti eggs, a likkle cuppa tea (she's Caucasian)
Her finest one that I know she definitely plays on is the Blackpool humiliations.

SleighAnotherDay · 12/12/2023 21:50

My mum says 'pants' just too much. As in 'as what a shame, that's pants.' The weather is pants, her job is pants, everything bad is pants. I cringe so hard!

She also says 'diabet-uss' instead of 'diabetes' and as most of her family have it, I have to hear about it a lot.

FatMumSlimDad · 12/12/2023 21:50

Oh and even though she's been and has American friends and I've emphasised it many a time.

My wonderful mother always pronounces it

New Or-Lee-Ans

3 syllables just for the second word!

The locals make the entire thing 2 syllables. Why is she adding in extras?!?

Hitshow · 12/12/2023 21:50

Likkle for little.

Wishingonaplane · 12/12/2023 21:50

My MIL says FO-tograffy instead of photography

purplestripes23 · 12/12/2023 21:51

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper Interesting, I don't know anybody else who says it like that. And she's not even Irish! 😁

BashfulClam · 12/12/2023 21:51

My mum says ‘Beege’ when saying Beige. Mil has her own language:
Clairns=clarins
Dun-lin=Dunelm
Poadin Mills=Ponden Mills
ibufoben=ibuprofen and several others. Once she makes up a name she won’t change.

i used to have a boss who said ‘Jool-Yah’ with emphasis on the Yah rather than the softer ‘Jool-ee-ah’

BumpheadParrotfish · 12/12/2023 21:51

My mother really struggles to pronounce place names in a way that doesn't offend my ears

The worst example is pronouncing Phuket as "fuck it". No one wants to be loudly told in public about her random neighbours Shirley and Bob's holiday plans to "fuck it" in the new year

TheAlchemistElixa · 12/12/2023 21:52

My mum pronounces vegan as vay-gan, instead of vee-gan. Bizarre. Toe curling. Infuriating.

Behindyouiam · 12/12/2023 21:52

My dad used to say sangwich instead of sandwich

Grin
Projectme · 12/12/2023 21:53

"My husband says woomd for womb which makes me feel sick."

My DM says something similar..."woon/woonm". I cringe everytime and want to scream "its part of your own anatomy woman!!! At least know how to say it!!!"

A friend pronounces falafel as fal-A-fel.

Dotcheck · 12/12/2023 21:53

Nasty thread, but hey, it’s about old people, so who gives a shit?

Maybe he got it confused with the Roman poet Virgil and thought it was about something else entirely!

purplestripes23 · 12/12/2023 21:44

My mum pronounces the word film weird for some reason. It always comes out as fillem

Fillem is regional. My dad used to say it. I say it now as well .He also called an ice lolly "lolly ice" , which I also adopted, much to my kids' horror 🤣🤣

fetchacloth · 12/12/2023 21:54

Correct I agree, these aren't complaints or designed to shame anyone 😉

NancyJoan · 12/12/2023 21:54

Some of these are making my cry with laughter. Some, I say myself.

purplestripes23 · 12/12/2023 21:54

My MIL says "burnie" for hot. It's so annoying

FatMumSlimDad · 12/12/2023 21:55

Ah I've been catching up reading these.

Love them.

MIL's croissant is AMAZING.

Cross-ant (like an angry bug)

Marleymoo42 · 12/12/2023 21:55

When I was growing up my mum asked friends whether they played rugger and mispronounced everyone's names. Michelle was Mee - shell, Lisa was Leeza.

Pizzas were pitzas. She'd refer to other countries by their previous names Thailand has only recently stopped being regerred to as Siam. It made me feel like the generation gap between us was enormous.

Current irritations include veGAN!

Reading some of these posts, I think we might be related!

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 12/12/2023 21:56

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 12/12/2023 21:47

Is she from Bradford?

Don't the locals usually pronounce it Brattford?!

Exactly.

Notsurehwhattdo · 12/12/2023 21:56

Haha, I was always asked if I would like a 'serviette' with my dinner, I was then given a piece of kitchen roll if my answer was yes 😂

OP posts:
Veryangryboy · 12/12/2023 21:57

So many...
Sospan instead of saucepan.
Tuth instead of tooth.
Pizza is pit-sa

I thought I had matured and stopped letting these things annoy me but then COVID happened. And she she pronounced it with co as in cop. Aaarrggh!!
