Fed up of A.I troll hunting.

It's on almost every thread now. Even when people post previous threads they have written.

It's worse than regular troll hunting and seems to kill threads.

OP posts:

I don’t get people who feel the need to report on threads at all. I miss the threads we used to get on mn. Someone would post something where they were clearly taking the piss, we’d get a few pages of absolutely hilarious replies. And then someone would report them for being a troll and it would get taken down. We all know it’s a troll, but it’s fucking funny and completely harmless? Why report and at worst take away the support from someone who is genuinely desperately seeking help and potentially push them over the edge, and at best it will just get deleted which has made absolutely no difference to your life whatsoever. If you don’t like a thread then just scroll on?

Well yes, that's the problem. These people are just trying to show off how clever (they think) they are, with an extra dose of sneery nastiness thrown in.
Troll hunting is against the rules, so if they did actually care they'd quietly report and leave it there.

I presume you saw the thread yesterday that was pulled for this, OP? Poor poster looking for support, and twattish smart arses came tearing apart her writing style, syntax etc. and calling her a bot.
Awful behaviour.

I don't know. I work with GTP-4 every day and I can spot an unmodified post generated using GTP a mile away it's really obvious when you use it a lot. I've only called di tout once when it was blatant, and the OP admitted using it. That being said, there are posts that don't scream AI to be that have been jumped on too so...

I’m just catching up to what troll hunting is. Isn’t banning it some sort of freedom of speech blocker? Who’s choosing to ‘ban’ troll hunters? Surely not Mumsnet - which I thought was a freedom of speech place? I mean, why shouldn’t we call it out if we suspect it? Do we want to chat as if the bots are real? Isn’t that worse than derailing a thread - so what if we do? Because otherwise it sounds eerily like the preferred way is to ignore and just carry on.

Yes, the one time I called it out it was because I didn't want people wasting their time trying to help the OP for nothing. That being said, if it's annoying I won't do it again. I hate grammar nazis, so I don't want to be like that!

I agree! The only time I’ve reported a troll thread is when they were literally making racist remarks and insulting everyone who responded. They were doing this across three threads too.

When the troll isn’t harming anyone, I don’t see the point in reporting it. Especially when the comments are funny and everyone’s having a laugh! Some people act as if MN pays their bills lol

It is not bots posting on MN. It is people using AI generators to create material for them to post on MN. Back in my day, people had to use their own imaginations to make up clickbait. Now they have generators to do all the work for them. Laziness.

This. It’s people using an AI generator to write posts either because they need help writing (and are genuine ), or because they want something completely made up but convincing. People have their own reasons for making stuff up on MN I guess.

Also I think ‘is this an AI’ has just become the latest way on here to say ‘this thread is weird’ or ‘chinny reckon’.

I agree some troll threads evolve into something hilarious. Let them stand!

My only issue is with the ones that play on people's emotions or trauma. Dead babies, rape, child abuse, dying relatives, suicide ideation etc. Those ones are not harmless.
