To ask for help with getting rid of burnt smell in house?

My lovely 3 year old put her stuffed microwaveable warmie into the microwave today without my husband and I noticing. She meant to put it on for 90 seconds and accidental put it on for 90 minutes 🙃. 15 minutes in we smelt smoke and removed the offending ~smouldering~ rabbit from the house. Obviously we have had a very strict conversation about using the microwave in future and will be switching it off at the wall inbetween uses.

This was 8 hours ago now but the house still STINKS. I have put some bicarb and vinegar into the microwave to try and absorb some of the smell. The microwave somehow is entirely undamaged and clean but I have wiped it down anyway. We also have a dehumidifier running in the utility to try and draw some of the smell out of the air. What else can I do? We don’t own an air purifier but obviously that would be preferable. The smell is physically hurting my nose now 😩

After an incident with a microwave and a baked potato when I was 15, I know that you just have to wait. Wash what you can like cushion covers or curtains. But have the windows open and wait.

Oh dear. I was hoping there was some miracle cure 😂

thanks, I’ll sit tight

Try boiling lemons/lemon juice/vinegar in pots as well as having windows open as much as possible. Also use a spray of 50% water to vinegar to wipe down the kitchen surfaces. The vinegar smell disappears after a day or so. (This worked for me after boiling a pot bone dry while boiling 4 eggs.) Good luck!

will be switching it off at the wall in between uses.

Absolutely standard practice when a kid gets mobile & curious. Plus washing machine, dryer, toaster, etc. They watch and then they copy.

Having said that, preparations of Fuller's Earth, such as many kinds of cat litter, are really good at absorbing smells. You can sprinkle it on floors or carpets and later vacuum it up before it gets too damp. It's good for de-smelling bins, and a saucer of it works in a fridge.

@blarn I also had an incident as a teen with a baked potato.

I couldn't stand the smell so much I've never cooked my own since for fear of a repeat!

I burnt some popcorn once. Had to throw the microwave away. The smell was killing me
