On 12 January 1948, three years after the end of the Second World War, in a rundown still-rationed Britain, shoppers in East London’s Manor Park were treated to the opening, by the Co-op, of the country’s first permanent self-service store.

I was just thinking about people who don't like using self checkout, would you like to go back to the shop keeper serving you from behind a counter as you're not there to do their job?

Self service in supermarkets is relatively new.

Not really sure which way the voting should be, maybe YABU vote should be we should stop any further progression and go back to only people operated tills, YANBU for we should keep moving forward.

That sounds more like a you problem than a problem with self service checkouts. How are you messing it up everytime?

It's not only me - I was including the times it goes wrong for someone else, too - witnessed by me.

But replying to your question - if I knew that,it wouldn't happen again - would it?

I work in retail and I love self scan - I don't remember the last time I went through a checkout (except in smaller shops that don't have a self scan option) as I always use self scan or the handheld scanners as it is so much easier and quicker.

Not only that but when I get to the end of my shift I just want to buy my bread, milk and big bar of chocolate without having to speak to anyone or make small talk which means self scan is perfect. Same when I'm in the store I work in and I need to buy tampons and the only checkout colleague is the 18yo teenage boy - I'm not embarrassed about periods but I don't want to be putting either of us into the situation of needing to make small talk over my Extra Large box of super max Tampax and super heavy flow pads when instead I can just scan them with the hand scanner and put them into my shopping bag without any discussion needed.

They are often a problem for me, too. For starters, if you shuffle your bag slightly while putting things in, or rearrange the content, it will complain about "unexpected item in bagging area" and demand a staff member to sort it out.

Tesco self service is SO s l o w. I want to be able to scan my stuff quickly and get out.

I love self service and scan as you go, its all I’ve used for years, if they took them out of my local Tesco I’d just do my shopping online instead for click and collect.

I am middle-aged and I love self-checkout - especially the trolley ones.

Dm hated shops where you had to be served. When a supermarket opened in Orpington she was ecstatic . In a supermarket you can pick things up, put things down, compare stuff, rummage at the back for the longest sell-by date. None of that with a butcher/baker/fishmonger serving you!
